DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension blocks searching from address bar in private windows

Description of the issue:
The DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension (hereafter DDGPE) makes it impossible to search from the address bar while in a private window.
If I type any single word in the address bar, it will automatically assume that what I’m typing is a URL and not a search term, unless my word includes a URL-forbidden character (e.g. the DuckDuckGo bang-syntax ‘!yt’ for youtube), in which case nothing happens and I remain on the same page I started on.
If I type multiple words, the latter also happens (since space is a URL-forbidden character).
This means that whenever I want to perform a search in a private window, I need to hit the home-button or the DDGPE drop-down menu first, and then search from there.

Now, I know this is caused by the search engine’s keyword, but since DDGPE controls the default search engine, I cannot set the keyword to ‘null’. And strangely this problem does not occur outside of private windows.

Steps to Reproduce and Actual Result

  1. Launch Brave
  2. Add DDGPE
  3. Open private window (Ctrl+Shift+N)
  4. Type a search term in address bar
5a. If your term is one word with no characters, Brave will try to connect to http://[search term]/
5b. If your term includes spaces or other characters, nothing will happen

Expected result:
Similarly to what happens outside of private windows, I would expect to connect to[search term]

Reproduces how often:

Operating System and Brave Version:
Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
Version 0.63.55 Chromium: 74.0.3729.131 (Official Build) (64-bit)
