Forever I have been able to compose a gmail and drag a file attachment from explorer to the email.
Now it doesn’t work.
One can click on the paperclip, then search for the file and attache that way, but it is slower.
Still works on Chrome.

What kind of files are you using? I can drag and drop .jpg files without any issues, and I am also on 1.16.72.
Have you tested this in a private window?
Have you testing this in a new test profile?
To create a new test profile click on the menu icon in the top right corner > create a new profile.
