Downloads on Mac shows digit icon but no download in Downloads folder

The exact issue I’m having is the same from an issue from 2022:

When I go to download any file or image, the download icon shows up in the Mac icon but no indication of downloads in the Downloads folder on my Mac or Brave downloads section.

There is no downloaded file on Mac or any trace on Brave other than the number icon:

Interestingly, the only downloaded file that worked was when I downloaded the nightly build for Brave. That worked as expected.

Things I tried, did not fix problem

  • Confirm download file location in Brave
  • Turned off all extensions
  • Redownloaded latest official build
  • Deleted caches in Brave
  • Restarted Brave and Mac several times
  • Turned off Brave Shields when attempting to download
  • Try Guest Profile in Brave
  • Tried download in Firefox (worked as expected)

What worked

Downloading image in Firefox.

Downloading DMG file such as the Nightly Build.

Changing to the Nightly Build:

Nightly build for Brave works as expected.

Brave 1.80.81 (Official Build) nightly (arm64)
Chromium: 137.0.7151.27

Mac OS

15.1.1 (24B91)

Brave version with problem

Version 1.78.102 Chromium: 136.0.7103.113 (Official Build) (arm64)

Take a look at the tips and test files for downloading:

Also might be useful for verifying that “at least something is happening” → creating a folder action that alerts you when there is a change to the Downloads folder. Steps found at a reddit article:

  1. Launch Automator
  2. Select “Folder Action” option
  3. Find “Display Notification”
  4. Select folder to monitor
  5. Enter a message to be displayed
  6. Save Action
  7. Test Action

I used those (ie muddled through those) steps, thereby creating an Automator Workflow that is saved to a Workflows sub-folder of the ~/Library folder (2nd screenshot) . . . and tested, getting a notification (3rd screenshot):

SAVED WORKFLOW:

NOTIFICATION DISPLAYED:

( . . . that showed when moving a file into the Downloads folder on my Mac.)

@jokingly2015,
Thank you for the detailed report. Very strange that the stable browser won’t download anything but the Nightly would. And to clarify, even with a clean/fresh you see this behavior?

Whoa, this worked!!

Steps:

  1. Go to Applications
  2. Right click on “Brave Browser” > Move to Trash
  3. Redownload Brave Browser.

Settings and profiles were conserved.

For others looking at this: This is different than downloading Brave and “replacing” the existing Application file. What I was trying before effectively updated, not clean-installed Brave.

Thank you!
