Download no more working, all extensions disappeared

Description of the issue:
I’ve been using Brave for years now but since last reboot (W10 update request) all my extensions are gone except

  • BitDefender Anti Tracker,
  • Anti-Grabify and
  • Youtube Shorts block
How can this issue be reproduced?
  1. W10/64 update requested a reboot. Since then, all (but 3 above) extensions I had on Brave disappeared and I can’t install them anymore. When I try to, I get either
  2. ‘Download Interrupted’ error message at bottom left
  3. or ‘alongchainofalpha.CRX’ - antivirus scan failure (and there is nothing in DL folder)

I tryed to DL again BraveInstaller from site, I could not DL.
Thus I had to go through Firefox to DL it.
Closing Brave and installing it again did not fix the pb.

Expected result:
Installing back the extensions I was using so I can resume using brave.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.75.178
Additional Information:
Browsing is ‘ok’ but lack of extensions gets experience back to 2000’s.

Suggestion: Test each extension, one-at-a-time

Meaning, disable and remove all of the extensions that you added.

Then, test the viability of each extension, one at a time = no combinations.

After going thru the list of extensions, then test possible working combinations of extensions.

Where are you trying to download this file from? Also

What is throwing the error? Is it Brave or is it your AV software?

My AV (BitDefender) is not raising any alarm in its logs.
Those messages are prompted directly in Brave.
At first, I felt pb was Expensions issues (that could be related to Manifest V3).
But since I can’t even DL the Brace Install file from brave.com (with same message), I might be wrong.

@Draggor,
To clarify, you’re saying that if you go to brave.com/download and try to download the install file, you get the same error?

Can you please try launching a Guest profile (Menu --> More tools --> Guest profile) and see if you’re able to download files using the guest profile window? Make sure you close your original profile window when performing this test so only the guest profile window is open.

All extensions disapeared after reboot (but the 3 I prompted in initial message) and none is allowed to be installed.
Even initiating DL of the BraveBrowserSetup-BRV002.exe from brave.com is not working when I use Brave. DLing this same file works fine using Firefox.

Thanks for suggestion !

I think we went a step beyond :
In Guest profile, when I went to brave.com and initiated the DL, it went
to the ‘where do you want to save’ box; (I almost felt my pb was identified (corrupted profile)).
Sadly, when I pressed SAVE, it bugged all the same.

I then tryed picking a different destination folder and the file DLed correctly !

Thus, I went back to my usual profile and changed destination folder…
Still not working. Error message is either get ‘problem occured’ or ‘verify your internet connection’.

So…
Looks like my usual (default ? I don’t remember creating any peculiar profile at first… but was years ago hehe) is ‘corrupted’ and does not allow DL anymore.

Would fixing the DL issue also fix the Extension’s one ? That’ll be next step hehe.

New lead is : how do I reset my profile without losing everything (favorites, default opening tabs and vault) on it ?

Once again, thanks all of you who are trying to help me fix this. :fist_right: :fist_left:

PS: I try to give step by step process so it could help anyone understand the process and possibly figure out how to fix their issue in the future (once we fixed mine )
PS2: Please forgive my mistakes, frenchy’s doing his best to be understood.

Do you have any AV software on your system (rather than just the BitDefender extension)?

Yup, I’ve been using BitDefender Total Security for quite some time and it’s never been a problem (so far).
There is no alarm nor any kind of blocking in logs of BitD.
Moreover, on your smart suggestion, using a Guest Profile, I was able to DL the brave install file (but had to change the destination folder) makes me feel it is not an AV issue but rather a ‘corrupted profile’ one. of course, it’s only a feeling from my limited knowledge in computer science.

I would try to uninstall, reboot, reinstall Brave, assuming I can ‘save’ important stuff in my current profile (favs and maybe, manage to keep a track of my expensions (even though they are all gone atm)).

It may be a profile issue but honestly I suspect it is due to the AV extensions you have installed. Can you try disabling them and testing?

I disabled it, same issue trying to DL Brave Install File;
closed Brave; opened it again, same issue.
I removed the extension, restarted Brave, same issue
Always getting ‘failure - error during DL’

On AV side, I see ‘soft granted to reach network brave.exe’

@Draggor would it be possible to get a screenshot of the AV error you’re seeing on your end?

Here is the error message I get when I try to DL the install file :

I disabled all extensions (only 2 were left anyway since all others just disappeared after reboot), pb still occurs with same error message.

Can you tell me if you have Safe browsing disabled in Settings --> Privacy & Security --> Security?

Hello there,

Sorry for the delay, I’ve been sick with no access to my computer.

Wierdly, at a point, my computer had a memory dump error while I was playing (LoL for info) and I was forced to reboot again.

After this reboot, everything was fixed. Thus… I guess the pb was in previous reboot that had, somewhere, a ‘lock’ activated and rebooting once again fixed the pb. (possibly related to the W10/64 update that had requested first reboot).

Anyway, my pb is fixed and you can close the ticket.

I thank thee a lot for yer help and dedication on the subject.

BRegards,

D.
