Crash on open - again - and now cannot download Brave at all

Mac OSX 10.9.5

I experienced the previous issue with crash at open with a Brave update, and downloaded a prior version of Brave, which I was still using.

I walked away from my laptop for a couple of minutes tonight, and when I got back, Brave had crashed, and continually crashed upon attempts to re-open. I noted that the error report stated 0.20.42 was failing; this was confusing as this was not the version I had downloaded, and I had not upgraded. I have tried to download the newest version; apparently that is it. I got rid of what I had in Applications, and now I have no version!

I no longer have the link for where the old version is. Please help!

Hi @crashtestdummy

It sounds like you’re aware that we have an issue logged for this which the team is researching ( and are interested in getting the last working version for MacOS 10.9.5, correct? If so, it can be found here: However, it should be noted that if you close/restart this version of Brave, you will be updated to the latest version which is currently not working with this OS (just putting this note here for anyone else who comes across this thread, you already seem as though you know this info @crashtestdummy  )

Actually, I did not know that any restart of Brave would automatically update to the latest version. But that information does tell me what to do. If my system decides to shut down for whatever other reason, I need to reload this older version - thanks for the link - I’ll keep it handy.

Thanks @crashtestdummy! Going to close this thread, but please reach out if you have any other issues or questions.

Hi @crashtestdummy

We’re currently moving toward the rewrite of Brave which includes using Chromium’s native UI. We’ve started putting builds out there for users to take a look at the re-write, which you can find here:

You’re welcome to try out the re-write now if you’d like and play around with it a bit - see if you have the same issue. However, there are some things to be aware of:
• it’s still very early and many features are missing (Tor, Sync, functional Brave Payments just to name a few)
• it crashes, more often than we’d all like right now
• some sites have issues with web compatibility
• these are not official dev channel builds however they will be automatically updated as new versions are released

There’s more, but that’s the big stuff that I can think of at the moment. It’s very much “use at your own risk” right now and not really suited to be a daily driver, but it will give you a peek into what’s coming. You may also enjoy this reddit post from our CTO:

If you do decide to try our new version out, please let us know if you find any issues in a new thread, you can write one up here:
