CRASH: on Brave Dev Version 0.68.104 Chromium: 75.0.3770.100 w/shields on (off does not crash)

  1. with shields on go to
  2. observe crash on dev version

Always a pleasure to see you post here but please try and remember the template/guidelines when posting

It’s quite important to the support process – like right now, for example! Because renders for me without issue:

So, now I have to ask you things like:

  • Can you tell me if you’re using Windows 10 or Win7?
  • Is there a particular page on the site that causes the crash or is it just when you land there?
  • Do you have any extensions installed? One of them may be causing some sort of interference.
  • If you visit using a Private window, do you get the same result?

windows 10
when I land there
I have lastpass installed
private window with shields enabled also crashes

Also crashes on Version 0.66.101 Chromium: 75.0.3770.142 live release

hardware specs:

gpu: nvidia 2080ti

Thanks for the additional information. Have you tried disabling Hardware Acceleration yet?

Settings --> Additional Settings --> System --> Hardware Acceleration

disabling hardware acceleration doesn’t fix it (edited because I checked the tab and it had eventually crashed again)

Well this certainly is strange. Reaching out to some team members for more info – thanks for reporting. Hopefully have more information on this soon.

Cool, let me know if you need anything more specific about my system config, etc. One thing that is a bit different is my enterprise install of Windows 10 maybe?? I got new nvidia drivers but it didn’t change it.

Just tested with Brave Dev 0.68.104 and shields up on Win 7, but it doesn’t crash for me. I do get some odd warnings in the console log though:

[Intervention] Slow network is detected. See for more details. Fallback font will be used while loading:
(index):300 [Intervention] Slow network is detected. See for more details. Fallback font will be used while loading:

Not sure if that has any relevance for crashes though.

EDIT: There is something weird with that site. The page loads fine when I have uBlock Origin active, but if I disable that plug-in, the site becomes unresponsive and never finishes loading.

EDIT 2: I ran the page load with uBlock Origin disabled but with the Developer Tools active, and the Developer Tools actually stopped the page loading in the debugger “before a potential out-of-memory issue”. On line 93 in the page source to be exact. If I load the page without the Developer Tools, I can see that one of the brave.exe processes increases its memory usage very very quickly until a JavaScript pop-up asks if I want to wait, or exit the page.

Great reporting @jek6094. Very strange that I don’t see the same behavior on my end – will have to run additional tests. I believe we have another update planned in the next week as well which may end up resolving this issue at the same time.
