Is it really necessary to update the browser on what seems like a weekly or sometimes daily basis? Can’t you arrange to do a revision at least monthly if you must do so many updates?
I recently delayed yet another request to update only find, after I did eventually do so, there was another one the next day. It is the most frustrating aspect of an otherwise good browser and I have contemplated changing browsers as a result.
Yes
What do you mean?
Updates often come out to fix issues. For example, the more recent one was to resolve a Chromium vulnerability that was discovered. https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/google-fixes-chrome-zero-day-exploited-in-espionage-campaign/
But updates tend to have to be launched as various OS receive updates, as bugs are found, or even things like the aforementioned vulnerability comes about. It’s just a constant work in progress to keep things working, maintain security/privacy, and to introduce new features.
Chromium receives updates at least once a week, then has big updates once a month. Brave essentially follows the same pattern. You can see the larger planned update periods at https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Brave-Release-Schedule which won’t include the smaller updates between meant to patch issues. Also they say what I was mentioning earlier:
As announced via https://security.googleblog.com/2023/08/an-update-on-chrome-security-updates.html, we’ll be getting minor chromium bumps every Tuesday. These releases will sometime also include
P1
&P2
issues that are deemed important enough to get out ASAP rather than waiting for a major release. For example, HackerOne reports or other issues that are affecting users in a major way.
Great reply @Saoiray.
At most, unless there is something major issue that needs to be fix immediately, Brave stable will typically receive update from us (that is, fixes we’ve made, features we’ve added, design adjustments, etc) once every couple of weeks, plus a Chromium update usually around once a week.
Cannot overstate how important it is to ensure that your browser (or any app, really) is fully updated. Most people spend a ton of their time online in a browser and interact with a litany of sites, many of them often containing/having sensitive information on them. Bugs and new features aside, you should always keep your browser up to date to ensure you have the latest security fixes.
