I would like to upgrade Brave from 1.67.134 to 1.69.168. My system is LMDE6 and already contains version 1.69.168 in the Flatpak container. I have started the new version and expected that all settings of the old version will be applied automatically in the new one. Unfortunately this is not the case. If it stays like this, I will have to stick with the old version. Please help.
Hello,
I find only one profile folder named ~/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/System Profile
it is the right one?
should I uninstall first the old version after I backed up my settings?
@pileva2,
How did you initially install the browser?
hello,
the old version 1.67.134 originally comes from a download from the Brave website, which was then maintained via the update management of LMDE5, then LMDE6.
The new version 1.69.168 was offered to me in LMDE6 via the update management (Flatpak). I have also installed it.
@pileva2,
I’d recommend you uninstall the flatpak version, then reinstall via the steps listed here:
I don’t think that uninstalling flatpak will remove data as well (pinged our Linux team to confirm), but just in case you might want to make a safe copy of your User data
folder (in ~/.config/brave
) just in case.
As an additional safety measure, you can manually export passwords and bookmarks as well. To do this:
Export bookmarks — In Brave, go to brave://bookmarks/
, click the overflow (three dots) icon on the top right, then Export bookmarks
(you can import them from this menu as well).
Export passwords — In Brave, go to brave://password-manager/settings
and Export passwords
(you can import them from this menu as well).
I did it exactly as you recommended. It worked: All passwords, bookmarks and also the Infinity new tab settings are available. The new version is now 1.69.168. Thank you very much.
You’re very welcome! Have a great day.
