Cant install extensions on Brave - possible Chromium issue

Having to use Firefox to post

Description of the issue:

Having major issue since the latest windows update last night that brave will not install extensions

After the windows update, Brave showed the extensions were corrupted tried to repair but they were just removed.

Had download interrupted error and also that they failed the virus scan!

When i tried to reinstall i get the virus scan prevented the install this was with multiple extensions like Lastpass/Bitwarden/Rakuten.

Bitdefender anti tracker and Google translate extensions are not affected and run normally all others needed repair and were removed when repairing by the browser

I have paused Anti virus protection with no change both in Brave and also in Bitwarden and this did not help

I have done the registry change fix to policy and restarted and still not working

I have deleted all data from brave

I have reset brave no improvement

I tried a new a new profile and this did not work

I downloaded and installed Brave as admin and no change

I have downloaded chrome and installed and same issue

Microsoft edge has the similar issue

I have downloaded Firefox and installed and no issues with installing same extensions in Firefox

Any ideas of potential repair to Chrome/Brave

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. tried Chrome and same issue with virus stopping install from chrome store
  2. tried Edge and got “An error has occurred”

Expected result:

Brave Version( check About Brave): Uninstalled but it was latest also the latest (BraveBrowserSetup-BRV002)
Also tried (BraveBrowserBetaSetup)

Additional Information:

If I recall correctly, you must ENABLE the Developer mode switch:

And, FYI, Brave Browser also has built-in extensions (the screenshot at the Brave Support Help Center, is a bit out-of-date):

Developer mode was enabled and does not explain why i have the same issue on all chrome based browsers.

No issues with Tor - Mozilla based
No issues with Firefox

And its not about what extensions come with Brave up until this error i could install any that i wanted from the chrome store.

Tried even turning off app protection on Windows but no change?

Would be grateful for some feedback on other options

I have uninstalled Brave and Chrome

Thank you

You already figured it out: Chromium bug

Ok thanks for confirming i was going mad as i could not find any current issues and I had exhausted all the previous fixes.

Any details when this bug will be fixed as I really like brave?

I suspect, the following issue, here at Brave Community, is related:

The issue will probably show up at GitHub > Brave Browser. But your guess, as to when, is as good as my guess.

Thank you so much i was going insane - lol

I changed the title of your Original Post.

Awesome thanks for all your feedback

Given what you encountered overnight, and the steps that you took, the first steps I would have suggested at the time, would have been to disable and remove all your installed extensions, immediately.

As a general rule for recovering from a possible extensions problem:

  1. Disable and then remove all extensions that you have installed.
  2. Install and enable, the extensions, one-at-a-time.
  3. Test different sequences of those installations.

If I read your comments correctly, you have extensions:

  • Bitdefender Anti-Tracker
  • Bitdefender Anti-Virus
  • Bitwarden
  • Google Translate
  • LastPass
  • Rakuten

You probably could get by without Bitdefender Anti-Tracker, given Brave Browser Shields capabilities.

Of course, Bitwarden and LastPass are in the same password management class.

I would install Bitdefender Anti-Virus, last, because it is the most grasping/instrusive/interference-capable.

In other words, despite the indication that there may be a Chromium bug (Google Chrome and MSFT Edge both exhibited the same troubles as Brave Browser), you may find by testing extensions installation sequences, that you solve the problem.

PS. New release version: 1.73.101

Thanks

They were uninstalled from Brave as one of the tests also created a new profile without anything loaded

Does not explain the issues with Edge or Chrome where no extensions were installed as i don’t use edge and i download Chrome new and installed for the first once i had the issues as i have always used Brave on this laptop.

I also tried Nightly version of Brave and also beta versions

I have downloaded the latest from your link(BraveBrowserSetup-BRV030) and installed
Removed all the extensions as they all showed up all needing repair apart from the Bitdefender extension so i removed all from Brave and shut down.

Started Brave back up with no extensions (Its in Developer mode) and then tried to install BitWarden again where it failed the virus scan so this did not work either.

Brave is up to date

[Version 1.73.101 Chromium: 131.0.6778.139 (Official Build) (64-bit)

OK so tonight i checked Edge and and tried to install extensions recommended so not the extensions i have normally tried and it installed. I then tried to install Bitwarden and it installed no messages so did last pass and the other extensions i normally use in Brave.

So i installed brave again Version 1.73.101 Chromium: 131.0.6778.139 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Installed no issues and picked up my profile so bookmarks were all there it then installed Rakuten & Fakespot Fake Amazon Review automatically as i had these before.

So now i tried Bitwarden and it installed with no issues and so did other extensions.

Not sure what has changed today but today all is normal so i cant say its solved because not sure what changed?

Well, @Baldrick2024, marking as solved as at least seems like you’re saying it resolved for you. It’s not uncommon for issues to happen as updates occur to browsers, extensions, or even our OS. I’m guessing issue that occurred was resolved by one of those.

If issue arises again, I guess either go for a new topic or try to add to this (if it’s still open)

Thanks i am going to continue to verify if i can reproduce the problem as it caused me significant grief over the past few days and i would like to know if its something that can be prevented.

Brave has been working well for the past 2 days

But i noticed on Windows security that i had turned off Reputation based protection at some point during the troubelshooting i use BitDefender anyway.

So I turned this back on and i had to reboot and back came the issues all the extensions were corrup and needed to be repaired and when i went to repair them they failed the virus scan.

So i turned it off again and rebooted some extensions were fine but some needed repairing so i repaired and all good again no issues with repair or install.

Not sure if this is the only issue but truning this off has returned brave back to usable again?
