Can't disable dashboard as homepage on android

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
I would like the browser to just show nothing when opening a new tab. I got that to happen on desktop. But having “homepage” off in settings on my mobile still insists on showing the dashboard.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Go to settings > Homepage
  2. Set to “off”
  3. Open new tab (still shows dashboard)

Expected result:
Dashboard is not shown, only a blank screen.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.51.144 Chromium 113.0.5672.92

Mobile Device details
Android 11; Build/RP1A.200720.012
Samsung S21

Additional Information:
I’m not sure if I’m just doing it wrong, but it seems like this is what should happen.

@vCG8rcwmHY Ok, few things to unpack here.

Homepage is referencing what your browser will go to if you hit the Home button. Currently, you only see the home button if you Enable bottom toolbar under Appearances in settings.

You’ll see the difference in the screenshots below. Look at the bottom left. You’ll see on the top one that there’s a Home button icon. That is what appears when I have Homepage set to On. Then on the screenshot below that, Homepage is set to Off and you’ll notice that the Home button is no longer there, instead it has the + that would open a new tab.

That’s because it’s New Tab Page and not Homepage. Which has a bit of confusion while also making a bit of sense. One would think that if you have Homepage turned on, that it would go to it when the browser is opened. I mean, that’s what it’s supposed to go to as Home, right?

But instead Brave currently has that overwritten and it defaults to New Tab Page each time instead. Which essentially turns Homepage into just another shortcut for you to go to whichever site you like to frequent the most. As otherwise, what’s the point?

If you want a blank screen, you need to go to NTP in your settings and turn everything off there. If you turn off Background Images, Show Top Sites, and Show Brave Stats then it will become a blank page…much as you see in the screenshot below.
