Cannot use independent IPFS node with Brave nor configure the Brave node to use different port

Description of the issue:

As in title, Brave fails to start its IPFS node because I already have an independent node running which hogs up the default ports. The error message is very helpful too, “An error occurred, please try to launch again”, I had to guess why it isn’t working. I can set IPFS companion to use an external node, in which case it correctly connects, but this seems to be incompatible with Brave’s config, as trying to access an IPFS resource errors out and I have to fallback on the gateway.

  • Can Brave work with an external node at all?
  • If not, can I set it to use non-standard ports so that it doesn’t mess with my independent node?

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Have an IPFS node running on default ports
  2. Start Brave
  3. Navigate to brave://ipfs
  4. See that node is offline, try to start it
  5. Notice the extremely helpful error message

Expected result:
Brave works with an independent node or can be configured to at least not clash with it.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.43.89 Chromium: 105.0.5195.102 (Official Build) (64-bit)
