Cannot set tracking and blocking ads to "standard" for all websites

Description of the issue:
After some changes in my settings, I wanted to reset my security settings of tracking and blocking adds to “Standard”. But still, all websites do not have shields on.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

I am using a German localization so the names of the menus are my translations.

  1. Go to “Settings”
  2. Choose “Security”
  3. Choose “Standard” from the menu “Tracking and blocking ads”

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

All (new) websites do not have “standard” shields on. I need to do the setting for every website individually.

Expected result:

“Standard” shields for tracking and blocking ads on (new) websites should be on.

Reproduces how often:

Always.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):

macOS Catalina Version 10.15.6
Version 1.11.101 Chromium: 84.0.4147.89 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit)

Additional Information:

None

Hi @petzi,
Can you try creating a new temporary test profile and seeing if the issue persists?
Click on the menu icon in the top right corner > create a new profile.

The new profile starts with shield “Standard” and works. After I disable shields it works (correctly) without shields. BUT: opening up the settings again it shows “Standard”. But in that case “Standard” is no shield at all.

After I changed to “Aggressive” it worked. And it also showed “Aggressive” when I opened settings again. But setting to “Standard” has no effect at all. It showed the same behaviour as before (“Aggressive”).

(I am using a German OS, so the translations are mine.)

@petzi,
I’m going to need some clarification on the situation. Can you run me through again what you’re doing step by step to see this issue?

to return all the shield setting to default for all website do the following

go to settings then additional settings then Privacy and security then Clear browsing data then advanced Time range all time then select only site and shields settings then clear

it will remove all website shield settings to the default

hope that help and have a nice day :slight_smile:

@Aa-ron,

I have changed my system language so that I have the original menu names.

  • I choose “Settings” from the right menu
  • I choose “Shields”
  • I choose “Standard” (or “Aggressive” or “Disabled”) from the drop-down menu “Trackers & ads blocking”

So now let’s repeat my actions to test shields with a new profile:

  • After creating a new profile I visit a site with many ads (https://www.heise.de/) and can see that shields works
  • I follow the above procedure and change to “Disabled”
  • I call the same website again and can see that no shields are working. The new tab with the new settings shows the website with all ads.
  • Now I repeat the above procedure again and want to change back to “Standard”. But I can’t as “Standard” is already on
  • Now what happens is that all my next calls to websites are without shields. I can’t turn shield only on, when I follow the above procedure and choose “Aggressive”.

Hopefully this will explain what I have done and where my problem is.

@justomeone1

thanks for your tip. My problem with the shield started after I have cleared my browsing data. But perhaps I did something wrong. I’m sorry but I am not sure if I understood your advice in all steps correctly. I will repeat:

  • Settings
  • Additional Setting
  • Privacy & Security
  • Here I open the submenu of “Clear Browsing Data”
  • In the overlay window which opens I choose “Advanced” and select from the drop-down menu “All Time”
  • Then I select only the options “Site and shields settings” (meaning I deselect all the options that are turned on: “Browsing history”, “Download history”, “Cookies and other site data”, “cached images and files”.

But if I understand correctly this would mean that all the settings I had turned on manually are gone. All websites will appear with all their ads. Is this correct?

If so, then this is not what I want: I want to have shields on for all websites. But not “aggressively”. Or did I not understand was “Standard” mean? I thought it is a standard kind of setting, which protects from the most obvious and annoying ads.

Excuse this long comment: But I had to describe not only in detail what I have done, but also my understanding of the functionality of the settings.

you very welcome @petzi

But if I understand correctly this would mean that all the settings I had turned on manually are gone. All websites will appear with all their ads. Is this correct?

all websites shiled will be back to default which will be standard
Trackers & ads blocking => standard
Upgrade connections to HTTPS => on
Cookie blocking =>only cross sites
Fingerprinting blocking => standard

standard mean the shield will block ads

now for aggressively vs standard
both block ads but the aggressively and strict one push it forward but can cause somesite to miss behave
so example setting fingerprinting to strict will make youtube show colored lined whe the timeline show up try it and you will see by your self

the only setting that will allow ads and fingerprinting is to set them to disable or turn off the shield

do not apologize we all have the right to ask and understand
for me i do use strict and aggressively untill some site miss behave then i try to change the setting till it work fine

hope that make it clear and have a nice day :slight_smile:
