Hello again,
I’ve been having trouble with YouTube.com again. There have been several bugs happening as of late that make it horrendously hostile to the user and are extremely upsetting to see; I know very well they are throwing a temper tantrum over the fact that people are still using Brave to get around things like their unskippable ads. Here are a few bugs that I have seen:
- Occasionally when on the browser version of YouTube, the “Video Previews” setting will forcefully re-enable itself. If you want to test this for yourself, simply disable the setting under Settings>General>Video Previews, and then spend a little while using the site as normal. Close and re-open/reload the site after maybe five minutes and immediately check the setting again after returning to the home page. Chances are the setting will have forcefully re-enabled itself. It will do this NON-STOP, by the way.
- While viewing videos, the comment section (which was previously added universally to the browser version in Brave regardless of how aggressive your adblocker is) and video feed underneath have completely vanished. The screen underneath is completely blank; the rest of the site works perfectly fine as normal. To my knowledge, this bug literally just popped up today. To test this one, click on literally any long-form video. Can be from off your home page, your recent history, the search bar. Doesn’t seem to matter; comment section and video feed do not appear.
This is all happening on version 1.78.1 of the app version, if that helps any. I’m unsure how to reach this “About Brave” section, but I did try to at least provide some help on this.
NOTE: Don’t listen to anyone who tries to support YouTube’s claim that using an Adblocker violates their ToS. It does not. I have quite literally checked their Terms of Service just before posting this, and it does not say you cannot use an ad blocker.
Thank you for your time.
@deepfried_kiwis thank you for the detailed report.
Testing this on my end to see if I can reproduce the error. Can you confirm what OS you’re using when you see this issue?
For reference, you can find the About Brave
page by going to Menu → Help → About Brave, or by going to Settings
and clicking the About Brave
section on the bottom left of the page:
Just realized I had accidentally posted this in Desktop and moved it out since to my knowledge it’s only an issue on the mobile app. I can still give the OS I use; it’s iOS 18.4.1. specifically.
I’m not sure what’s causing the disappearing comments/video feed issue as I tried toggling Brave Shields to see if it’s an adblock issue and the issue persisted. Again, this one seems to have happened overnight since the site was perfectly fine yesterday.
Thank you for the tip on how to find About Brave, too. As I’m considering the switch from console to PC gaming in the background, I may indeed end up putting Brave on my hypothetical computer so I can browse the internet without having ads shoved in my face.
Can you share a screenshot of how it looks on iOS for you?
Unfortunately not yet; I am still apparently a “new user” and cannot add attachments yet. However, I can at least attempt to describe how it appears.
Normally in the browser version of YouTube on mobile, the video will be in the top half of the screen; there’s the small bar above with the quick shortcut buttons to the homepage, search bar and settings, etc.
Usually, there will be the rest of the UI underneath - likes/dislikes, share, download, whatever it may be - followed by the comments section and then the video feed.
Hopefully this helped paint a reasonable picture of the mobile browser YouTube’s user interface. If you have access to, say, something even like Safari, you can open it pretty easily; browser YouTube’s UI is universal across all browsers, it seems. However, with the bug I’m having here, nothing except for the video itself (and thus the pause, rewind/fast-forward, video settings), homepage shortcut, search bar, and YouTube settings button appears. I did not previously mention this since I (and likely many others do not use the setting), but because the video feed does not load, the Autoplay function does not appear either.
If I am able to sooner rather than later I will try to get a screenshot of what the bug looks like in.
I’ve updated you permissions and you should now be able to add screenshots.
Here’s an example of what it looks like (video in the background is Baldermort’s most recent video on the Black Templars in Warhammer 40,000).
Just a minute ago, as well, I was browsing and was mysteriously logged out of YouTube in the background. I’m unsure if that is also a bug and just happened; there seems to be a lot of talk about YouTube being really buggy lately.
@deepfried_kiwis the issue of being logged out may be due to a known issue that the team is looking into presently. Can you please share what iOS version you’re using when you see this issue?
Still iOS 18.4.1; to my knowledge there is no recent iOS update, or at least one that I am aware of.
There is also a fairly less irritating bug I have noticed from time to time where upon fast forwarding in a YouTube video on the browser, the audio will cut out entirely. This is generally easily remedied by rewinding and fast forwarding back again, but it is still a bug nonetheless.
Thank you – hope to have more information for you soon.
