Browser not responding to sound output properly

Description of the issue:

Whenever I connect my desktop to another device through a HDMI cable, the sound output device for Brave becomes this new device regardless of me selecting another (such as headphones or speakers).

The critical part is that, when I unplug the HDMI device, Brave Browser (specifically) won’t reproduce any sound from any output device.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. plug an HDMI device while Brave Browser is running
  2. unplug the HDMI device
  3. pick a sound output device

Expected result: sound should be working

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Version 1.38.115 Chromium: 101.0.4951.64 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

  • my desktop is a Dell Latitude 3410
  • I’m using Ubuntu 22.04
  • the HDMI device is a Philco Smart TV
  • This behavior is only occurring with Brave, other applications (such as other browsers) are ok.

Wondering if the following is related:

Hi and welcome to the community. :smiley:

@mattches may be able to help. He is a member of the Brave support team.

I can’t help, but thought I would pass along information that worked for other users with sound issues.

  1. Update Brave and OS to latest version. Use Brave official releases.
  2. Make sure all audio (and video) drivers are up to date.
  3. Check OS sound settings.

You might want to see if the same behavior occurs if you create a new test profile. You can then delete the profile. You could also try installing Brave Beta and Nightly versions and see if the issue persists.

Good luck! Hope your issue is resolved. :smiley:

@tadeusvult,
Thank you for reaching out. This may be a Linux specific issue. On my end, I just tested my Windows machine — connected Brave to both my monitor (with built-in speakers) and my smart TV and played content on YouTube and Netflix which both worked without issue.

On that note, can you confirm that this behavior happens no matter what sound is playing out of the browser (that is whether you’re using Youtube, Spotify, Netflix, etc)?

I’ve also reached out to some of our Linux team for additional information. Appreciate your patience and hope to have an update for you soon.
