Browser Completely Down

When I got online this morning, Brave browser had completely crashed, including all websites and extensions on my PC. I can’t access anything in private mode either. All sites say they are not secure. I ran a complete security scan with Advanced System Care and restarted my computed but there no known security issues. Never had any problems with Brave so not sure what happened. The only thing that works is the I can see my history and my bookmarks. I can’t access settings, extensions, etc. Private browsing is also not working. MY OS is Windows 11. I just installed the latest update and restarted my computer but no change. Brave was up-to-date on 3/6/24 but I don’t know what version it is because I can’t access settings. I haven’t made any changes recently that I think would affect it.

@nancyasu93,
It looks like you can still access the browser Menu though right? If that is the case, can you please try launching the browser, going to Menu --> More tools --> Add new profile and tell me if the new profile works as intended? Make sure you close the original profile window first.

No, I tried that earlier and it didn’t work. I just tried again and I get a blank screen even in private mode.

Any other thoughts on this? Opened up Brave again this morning and it’s still the same today and I can’t access my passwords or create a new profile. My other browsers are working but all of my important information is stored in Brave. I immediately get notifications that extensions are crashing when I open it.

@nancyasu93,
I suspect it’s an extension causing the issue then. Lets try launching the browser with extensions disabled. To do this:

  1. Right-click on the Brave shortcut icon on your desktop
  2. Click Properties
  3. In the Target field, after the quotation, enter --disable-extensions
  4. Press Apply then OK

Try launching the browser now and see if it launches correctly. If it does, we know one of the installed extensions are the issue.

Unfortunately, that did not work. I tried it a few times and restarted my computer just to be sure.

As an update, the extensions are no longer crashing this morning when I start Brave, but the issue remains unresolved.

@nancyasu93,
Do you mean that the browser is still crashing even when your extensions are not enabled?

Yes. However, I spoke too soon because they are all crashing again.

@nancyasu93,
That is to say, the extensions themselves are crashing? If so, please use the flag to disable them on launch again, then I would recommend removing all of them. Then launch the browser and install them again one at a time so that you can isolate the offending extension(s).

Yes, the extensions are crashing. That’s the first thing that occurs almost every time I try to fix it and open the browser. I will try that and see what happens.

Thanks for your help.

I uninstalled all the extensions and added them back one by one. After uninstalling all the extensions, I still could not access bookmarks, passwords and websites will not display. It does not appear to me that the extensions are the problem and another issue is causing them to crash along with the other issues.

But the browser isn’t crashing, right? Its opening and running it just won’t allow you to actually connect to any websites.

Can you please try the following? In the windows search bar, type and search for the Run application. When it opens, type brave.exe --profile-directory="testprofile" into the box and hit OK. Does the browser launch and appear blank as it was before?

No, the browser is not crashing. When I typed that in, the browser launched, and I can open websites. Here is a screenshot since it says ERROR in the upper right-hand corner.

That error message appearing there likely signifies that one or more of the extensions you have installed is not functioning properly. Additionally, the fact that it does work in a fresh profile means that the issue is isolated to your other profile.

Are you able to update the browser to the latest version (v1.63.174) from the new profile?

I opened Brave and the error message is now gone. It is the latest version v1.63.174. My profile and the new profile are now working with no issues. If it was an extension causing the problem I could not isolate which one. I deleted several that I don’t use anymore or suspected could be the problem. I also researched them all to determine the trust level and got rid of any questionable ones.

I think I’m good now. Thanks so much for all your help because I’ve really missed using Brave!

You’re very welcome. I’m going to leave this thread open for now in case the issue reoccurs. If it does please let me know.

OK thanks for doing that! :heartbeat:
