I’m having issues with Brave working with Discord. Basically, when I click on an invite link in Brave, it tries to open Discord in Brave. It won’t redirect the invite to the Discord app. This is happening on Windows. I want it to open in Discord automatically instead of me needing to copy/paste it into Discord itself. Any advice?
I am still having issues with this, and after a bit of Google searching, I have discovered something. Anyone asking this exact question ends up being ignored. But if anyone asks for help getting Discord links to redirect to Brave instead of the app, no one hesitates to help them with their problem. Which tells me people are biased against using the Discord app when compared to Brave. All I want is an answer, and I’m sorry if I sound entitled or impatient. But locking a thread after 30 days doesn’t help, either
@AgentCPU0 a lot of times it’s because no information is provided. Like you deleted the template completely and haven’t said anything about what specific version of Windows you’re on (like 10, 11, etc) or which version of Brave you’re using. No idea if you’re using extensions, or any number of things which can cause problems.
No details were given on anything you have tried either. Such as did you attempt to disable Shields? Open in a private window? Test on a new profile? Check to see if it works on other browsers?
When people provide little to no information, it can be difficult to help. It requires people to make a lot of assumptions and then put in their own little bits of effort to replicate things.
What I was able to discover is disabling Shields will cause it to work as you want. This means it’s an adblocking thing. So then we would know that if you disable Shields for Discord then links will work as you want them to aqs long as you have Discord open.
But then you would take that feedback and share, where it can be passed along to the right people and get it fixed.
@fanboynz you aware of this? If disable ad and tracker blocking it will work as intended, otherwise clicking on Discord invite links just routes to web version for login. I grabbed a random invite link from the internet to test, using https://discord.com/invite/thedemontribe if you want to check it for yourself.
Tested on Release and Beta. For Beta, I just used default Shields settings and still had issues, so it seems related to default filters and all. Though on Beta when I completely reset everything, it shows for a split second like it’s opening in Discord app before it reroutes to page like below but never actually opens in Discord app
Tested on:
- Windows 11 Pro
- Brave 1.75.181
- Brave Beta 1.77.73
I’m on WIn 10, and Brave Version 1.75.181. Also, being required… No, forced to use the template, just to ask a question… No, just, no. There’s literally no reason why anyone should have their question ignored because they didn’t write it in a specific way. I’m not writing my thesis for Harvard, I’m just asking a simple question
Millions of users, countless questions. There’s only so much time to guide everyone step by step, especially when asking vague questions is already a waste of time. Do you realize how many issues come from people installing extensions, changing settings, or blocking things on their devices? This is exactly why providing information is necessary. It gives a starting point for troubleshooting and making useful suggestions.
When you provide no details, you make it difficult to help. If I asked you a “simple question” like How do I open this box in front of me?, could you answer? You wouldn’t know what kind of box it is, how it’s sealed, what tools I have, or anything else.
This isn’t about writing a thesis. It is just about using common sense and basic communication skills.
People who provide clear details get more attention because their issues are easier to diagnose. Time is better spent helping those who make it possible to be helped rather than those who share nothing and expect answers out of thin air.
Anyway, at least I was able to dig in a bit deeper and figure out what’s going on. Then tagged in people from Brave so they can try to take a look and resolve it. Just would be helpful if you make sure to try to help provide more details if you have any issues in the future.
@AgentCPU0,
Knowing the boilerplate information asked in the editor saves time for both support staff and for users as it gives us all of the relevant information up front so we can jump straight into troubleshooting the issue, rather than spending time replying back and forth to get that same information to ensure we know what we need to know about your [the user’s] setup. It is an extremely common practice.
If you were having issues with your car, you wouldn’t call the mechanic and say “My car is making a weird noise sometimes.” as that does not describe the issue accurately enough, nor does the mechanic know the relevant information – like the make/model of your car, how old it is, what you’re doing in the car when the sound occurs, etc.
As for your issue, I was able to get this to work with default settings in Brave. Note that I am on macOS but believe it will be the same for Windows and will test that here shortly. To get this to work, I had to
- Ensure that I was logged into my Discord account in the Discord app on my machine
- Ensure that (at least for the first time) I’m logged into that same Discord account in Brave
Without the above, I was getting the same issue both of you were encountering. After doing so however, I clicked that same link @Saoiray shared and landed on the discord website with the following prompt:
Note the checkbox on the prompt – when you see it, make sure you check that box before clicking Open Discord
. Once done, all Discord links in the browser should launch and open the app automatically.
Can you please confirm whether or not this works for you with the above conditions met?
I have never been given that prompt even once. I’ve even tried looking through settings to see if I clicked on something by accident, and found nothing
Can you please try logging into Discord in Brave browser, then open the Discord app on your machine. Then, click a Discord link in the browser and check and see if the prompt appears after clicking the link.
No, it redirected within Brave itself. Not even a popup
Thank you for testing.
After testing a bunch on my end it appears, as @Saoiray says, that Shields (specifically the Block ads and trackers
protection) is preventing the site from launching the app for some reason. I’ve informed our web compatibility team about this and will have them take a look.
We just pushed a fix for this:
Tested again and it looks like it’s working. @AgentCPU0 Can you close/relaunch the browser then test again and see if the Discord app now launches as intended?
@Mattches it’s not pushed through to everyone yet (I guess). I just updated and tried but it has the same behavior as before. I made sure to update all components and filters.
@Saoiray thanks – to confirm you’re running
Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.10942
?
Yep.
Just to make sure @Saoiray have you closed and relaunched the browser?
@Mattches yes. Even tried going to Beta to do and made sure to reset all settings and try again just in case.
I don’t have discord installed on this machine, but I get here:
Tested on Brave Ad Block Updater - Version: 1.0.10944
Yeah it appears to be working for me as well in Stable and Beta.
@Mattches hmm? It’s still the same issue. Not working unless you’re signed in via web. Should just be launching.
Again, behavior to have is it doesn’t go to any login page like Fanboynz was at. It should just directly open to Discord. Disabling Shields for Discord.com
allows me to get the expected behavior. Instead of login page Brave lands on:
So what Fanboynz showed in his screenshot is where it’s trying to open in the web version only. He’s at a verification thing because it has existing cookies from when he’s been there before. If no cookies then would be like the first screenshot in this one, where it asks for a display name and all.
