Brave reveals password when username is missing

I have a Brother HL-L2340D with a web interface providing admin access. There is only one field — the password field, a username is not required. The input is properly masked. When brave proposes to save the password the username is not empty but contains the password in clear text.

@karlsebal,
Can you please share a screenshot of exactly what you are seeing on your end/where it is appearing? Please ensure you block/hide/blur the actual password if it’s in plaintext.

Additionally, I would also encourage you to update to the latest build of the browser (1.73.89) and test again to confirm the issue persists after the update.

With pleasure.

Situation does not change when saving the password with a manually typed username

This is still an issue in Version 1.73.91 Chromium: 131.0.6778.85 (Official Build) unknown (64-bit)

@karlsebal,
I see what you’re saying now — it looks like the built in PW manager is seeing that there is only one field and since there’s only one field it’s defaulting to the Username field. Definitely a bit of a niche issue.

So is the issue simply that you’re able to see the password saved in plaintext in the built-in pw manger pop-up? Or is the issue that you want to save it but it will not autofill the password when on the site? Or both?

@Mattches correct — Issue is »only« that although I saved the password in the manager it will allways propose to save it again with the username filled in with my password revealing it to any viewer.

@karlsebal,This is likely an upstream/Chromium issue.

I’m wondering what happens if you tell it to Never save the password? Just curious to know if the prompt to do so still appears or not.
