I already solved this, but wanted to post it in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
A few days ago, I started to notice that some sites would show gibberish in the text of buttons. I thought it was an individual site problem, but started to see it in a few more sites and realized it was a browser/computer issue.
Posts from a few years ago were showing that it was either a problem with a duplicate system font, or specifically with the Roboto font, which users were recommending uninstalling. This seemed to fix the issue for most people.
In my case, it was the Helvetica Neue font causing the issue. I guess it was added as a system font in a recent Mac update, and was now conflicting with my custom installed one. Uninstalling it fixed the issue.
If you have this problem and it’s not Roboto or Helvetica Neue, open the web inspector, select the offending text, and check the styles for font-family. Whatever font is listed there for the gibberish text is probably your culprit.
