Brave opens a browser instead of mail app when clicking on a mailto link

Most of the info I’ve found on this is old, and referencing a Handler switch that does not appear in current versions of Brave. One suggestion is that the problem lies in the OS rather than Brave, and I’m almost convinced of that, except that Firefox will redirect a mailto link to my email client, whereas Brave, Safari & Chrome all send me to a Yahoo Mail web page.

I’m running Mac OS Sequoia 15.5. Can’t find any mac-specific info on this topic.

Thanks in advance for any help here.

EDIT: Ok, I found that directly entering brave://settings/handlers in the address bar took me to the proper location. I was able to delete the Yahoo setting, but then the email handler option disappeared.

Now, when I click on a Mailto link, nothing happens at all.

SO, how do I ADD a handler for the mailto action?

I’ve tested this behavior here: https://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_form_mail

Clicking the Send button does nothing.

EDIT 2, SOLUTION:
Seems the answer did not lie in the Mac OS, but in the Mac Mail program itself. in Mail, go to Settings > General > Default Email Reader, and choose Mail. Even though the handler for mailto directives still does not show up in Brave’s settings, clicking on a mailto now sends me to the Mail app.
