Brave on Amazon Fire too old to sync with Brave on Mac

Description of the issue:

I am trying to sync my Brave tabs on an Amazon Fire HD 10 (7th generation). I had a scare where the Fire wouldn’t boot for about a week, and realized that I’ve got a lot of tabs I don’t want to lose. When I generate the word cloud on the Fire and type them in on the Mac, it says the version is too old to sync. When I generate the word cloud on the Mac and type them into the Fire, it says too many words (25).

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

  1. On Fire, go to Brave->Settings->Sync
  2. Delete the existing sync item (only one, called “this device”)
  3. Click on Scan or enter sync code
  4. Try to scan the QR code on the Mac - fails
  5. Click on enter code words
  6. Enter word cloud from the Mac
  7. Click Confirm = “Sync device. Sync could not be setup [incorrect number of words]”

Reproduces how often:

Tried it three times now.

Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):

Android 5.1.1 Bui.ld/LVY48F - Brave 1.31.91.Chromium 05.0.4638.69
Mac OS Sequoia 15.5 - Brave v1.79.123, Chromium 137.0.7151.68

Type of devices currently running on the Sync chain in question:

Amazon Fire HD 10 (7th Generation)
Apple MacBook Air M2

Additional Information:

Neither Amazon Store nor Google Play seem to have a copy of Brave to install a newer version. Don’t know if there’s an older version of Brave for Mac that I could install that would work with the older Fire.

The Ask

How can I sync the tabs from the Amazon Fire with some/any other device (or export a list of tabs)? I have a Mac, an iPad, an iPhone and a Raspberry Pi (bookworm). Thanks.

Yeah so unfortunately using Sync here likely won’t work for the reasons you’ve laid out above. However, I would recommend the following (note that the exact steps here may differ slightly from what you see on your end) :

  1. On your Fire tablet, launch Brave
  2. Tap the tab box so that you are viewing all your open tabs
  3. Tap the overflow menu (three dots icon) and tap Select all tabs
  4. Then tap the overflow menu again and tap Bookmark all tabs
  5. In Brave, go to Settings --> Bookmarks
    • An optional step here to make your life easier may be to move all the tabs you bookmarked in the steps above into their own folder to keep them organized
  6. Tap the overflow icon here then select Export bookmarks

This will export all your bookmarks as an HTML file on your tablet. From here, you should be able to connect your tablet to a PC and/or upload/send the bookmarks.html file somewhere you can retrieve it on another device.

Simply get the bookmarks.html file onto your macOS device in whatever way works best for you, then launch Brave on your Mac and go to Settings --> Bookmarks and import that file.

Ok, thanks for that. I’ll give it a try.

Ok. First problem. Step 2. Tap the tab box… what is the tab box, and where would I find in v1.39?

Huh. I can’t find a tab box in v1.79/Mac either. And searching this site for “view open tabs” doesn’t get any relevant hits. Neither does examining the menu options, three dots options, or burger options. I don’t see any way to select all tabs in either version of Brave. Is it perhaps an extension I don’t have?

It’s the button you press to change tabs. At least for the mobile version of Brave. There’s no “tab box” for desktop.

What he was trying to say is potentially from your old version you could bookmark your open tabs, export bookmarks, and then bring that folder over to your Mac using that HTML save file
