Hi @DanMercurius,

Brave definitely shouldn’t be using that much HD space. If you look in your Brave profile folder located in ~/Library/Application\ Support/brave/, do you see any specific files that are really large? Or is it a combination of several different files? Here’s how my ~/Library/Application\ Support/brave/ looks like on a clean install which uses about 37MB:

Crashpad folder is 215GB! 100k files with each about 2MB… this is the second install. happened on the first as well, but since I didnt use it that much, it only swell up to 32 GB…

I stopped using brave for some days and the crashpad folder calmed down. WiIl try to use it again and report back.

Hi All,

On Windows the crashpad folder start to grow. Mine is 126MB and I am not using it too much. Shouldn’t be that big.

@Szefi @DanMercurius could you take a screenshot of chrome://crashes and share it here or via DM

@sriram Can I jump into this thread? I was originally thinking I was having issues with brave and CPU utilization but I am not starting to think that its related to crashing/logs. See here for my original issue Youtube playback stutters / Possible CPU util issues.

What I am thinking is happening is this. There is a constant crash loop happening until I restart brave. The I/O from crashing or just brave handling the crash is killing performance in the browser.

I will look at chrome://crashes next time this is happening to see if this is the case but looking at my log now i think it matches up to the last time I was experiencing issues. As it is now it looks like it was crashing 3-4 / second.

@sriram Was there not just a recent (last month or so) change to logging that increased logging output? I am thinking this is having impact when the browser gets stuck in these crashing loops.

not the whole page, do you need everything?
Seems like the crashes aren’t uploading properly and creating a bottleneck?

I’m only using Brave every now and then, seems to be performing better now.

I saw this thread and decided to check my own Brave folder:

$ du -chd0 ~/Library/Application\ Support/brave
773M	total

That is quite a bit of space, especially considering I don’t even use Brave as my default browser. Looking more into it, there are two culprits for me:

321M	/Users/echosa/Library/Application Support/brave/Cache
354M	/Users/echosa/Library/Application Support/brave/Partitions

Those make up the bulk of the space used. Should I just blow my whole Brave folder away and start fresh? If I do that, will this just keep happening again and again?

@infecto @echosa @DanMercurius thanks for the details. I have passed it on to the dev team and will update you guys on this soon.

I am unable to continue to use Brave as it uses all my resources. Even if I only have the browser open with one tab it uses 80-90% of my CPU resources and it crawls. I have tried multiple things, restarted computer but it keeps getting worse so I have now returned to Firefox. This has started only recently say a month or so. Do you have any recommendations? I have run Malwarebytes and Adware to see if I had a bug that was doing it but to no avail. I am not a developer so not sure what to do but I did like using Brave until I started having these issues. I am on Windows 7 Professional. After reading more I want to mention that I also experienced the dead tabs that I cannot close until I restart Brave.

This is definitely not normal

Try clearing all the inbrowser stored data [cookies, cache, passwords, form fill data, history, bookmarks & rest stored from the beginning of time]
Make sure you dont have any excessive plug-in/extension installed. If the problem still exists, just uninstall browser & manually delete the 250GB brave data folder. Freshly install the browser & make sure to use Incognito mode whenever you’re just surfing around [Like only watching a couple of Youtube videos, or surfing forums/blogs or similar basic surfing stuff]
This will make sure no unnecessary data is stored on your local hard drive.

I employed the practices above, was good for a while, then I didnt surf in incognito and after 2 hours crashpad is at 4,3 GB again.

@DanMercurius @BOB-vagene @silversofttail the issue is being investigated. Thanks for the additional information. This will definitely help in narrowing down the issue. We will keep the thread open and will update soon.

Mate
The issue you’re facing is unusual. I a normal user tried helping you but looks like your situation requires professional attention. I would still suggest you to keep using incognito as it has several benefits. Saves your local disk space, helps gain privacy, doesn’t keep any trackable data like cookies or cache that companies like Google, Amazon & Facebook can use to spy on you. No history or offline cache. Basically incognito is the key. If you seriously like brave & don’t want to shift to any other open source browser (Like Firefox Quantum), I’d thoroughly suggest keep using incognito

Hey there folks! Developer on the desktop product here. Thanks for hanging in there… we just released a patch (0.20.46) which fixes this issue

Basically, there was a condition that would cause a crash loop. This overloaded our crash reporting servers as well as the hard drives of folks experiencing the issue (as seen by the 250GB folder)

You are SAFE to delete this Crashpad folder. If you wanted to view the contents, you can navigate (in Brave) to chrome://crashes and see the reports queued up. I’d say to delete the folder though and relaunch Brave, just so any further crashes won’t get mixed up with those in the previous release (which had the bug)

Thanks again for your patience- apologies this issue came up

Hey Bud!
The bug has been patched
Delete the 250GB folder without any worries. I personally suggest you to completely uninstall brave browser, remove left over residues & folders. Make a fresh reinstall & use it normally  Hopefully this time it works out for you!

Just looked into a low disk space warning, Crashpad directory on my OSX/MacBook pro is 44.1GB!

Hi @moredillon

Please ensure you are on the latest version of Brave, then read this post: Brave is using 250GB of HDD and follow the instructions. Keep an eye on this folder and let us know if you still see the issue.
