Brave is hanging when opening new tabs from Brave Search

Description of the issue:
Brave is hanging when opening or closing new tabs initiated vs middle click when opening the tabs from Brave search results.

Some of the other windows’ contents are fine, but the UI hangs, as in, you cannot interact with the tabs bar, you can right click the tabs, but the context menu is non-interactable, then sometimes the whole browser hangs.

In Task Manager, whenever this happens, the browser seems to be writing to Disk at 17.4MB/s, this happens every time the hang happens, and the process is the brave browser itself, not a specific tab.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. search for anything on brave search.
  2. open a bunch of results using middle mouse button.
  3. hang.
  4. OR close a bunch of browser tabs quickly while a brave tab is open.

It mostly hangs while the AI is generating its response when searching.

Expected result:
No hang.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.73.91 Chromium: 131.0.6778.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Additional Information:
This happens on 2 machines (Windows 11, Xeon, 32GB ram, 3080 RTX), and (Windows 10, Threadripper 1950x, 64GB ram, 4090 RTX).

The only extensions are Bitwarden Password manager and I tried disabling the other extensions with the same results.

Thank you for the detailed report.
I can’t seem to reproduce this issue on my end on Win10 or macOS systems. I’ve asked some team members to test on their Win11 machines.

To clarify exactly what is happening here, you stated

So would the steps to reproduce this then be to first perform a search and then open some of those search results (using middle click) while the AI is responding?
