Brave iOS Causing Battery Drain Due to Excessive Background Disk Activity

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
Brave on iOS is consuming a large amount of system resources and writing over 1 GB of data to disk even on days with little to no usage. This has occurred for 4 consecutive days, and I’m experiencing significant battery drain as a result. The issue seems to happen in the background, and system logs show repeated disk write warnings tied to the Brave app.

How can this issue be reproduced?

    1. Open Brave normally (no specific heavy use required).
    1. Leave the phone idle or use it lightly for browsing.
    1. After several hours, battery is noticeably drained, and iOS logs show excessive disk writes from Brave.

Expected result:

Brave should not excessively write to disk in the background or cause rapid battery drain, especially with light or no usage.

I’ve got the iPhone 13 Pro and am experiencing the same battery drain problem. Look online and you’ll find the various recommendations for adjustments and an important phone re-start. While it hasn’t completely resolved the battery drain issue for me, it’s helped.

Specifically to your point, the iOS update included a re-indexing of everything on the phone, and “background refresh” that was suddenly turned on for every app on the phone. I had approx 40 tabs open on Brave, so these 2 activities together were causing a massive battery drain from the Brave app. I closed all tabs and the app, turned off the Background Refresh setting for everything (found under General Settings), and did a full phone restart. This has helped. I’m still experiencing faster battery drain than usual, and now I think it’s likely the iOS 18.5 Security tasks running in the background.
