So, 6 days have passed since I had this issue, and after a full clean reinstall Brave seems to be working fine now. Shield works fine too. And to those who wonder, how I reinstalled Brave, use Uninstall Tool, which is what it’s called, find Brave, right click on it, select uninstall, then this tool will search for all related files to Brave and later it will show them to you after it has done scanning, and when you click on Delete again, it will remove them.
NOTE: Make a backup copy of your profiles and stuff if you afraid to loose them. I deleted mine and had to re log in to all websites and recreate my profile all over again after I reinstalled Brave.
And that helped me to fix this issue. But yeah, after this Brave still doesn’t run as administrator if I try it. And I have a problems with youtube. Like, when I’m watching videos they tend to lag, or video stops, image of the video becomes white for a second or two, then it cuts back to playing video and video loading starts all over again but from the moment where it stopped despite the fact that video was already loaded.
Other than that youtube problem, Brave works fine for me. I hope that I don’t have to deal with this problem again in the future.
@NathanPrindler okay. And did you do as instructed in the answers here on this forum or did you decide to ignore it and just post about how you’re also having issues?
@NathanPrindler People aren’t mind readers. You didn’t explain much of anything about your issue. You just said you were having one and suggested it might be the same as what others experienced. However, those users resolved their problems by either disabling the “run as administrator” option or adjusting folder permissions. So if neither of those work for you it’s most likely that your situation is something different and you probably should make your own topic. Though I really would wager the issue likely is what was referenced here and the solution is in what was shared by Clifton. Regardless, more information would be needed.
When you post without mentioning your operating system, Brave version, any troubleshooting steps you’ve tried, or any other relevant details, it becomes very difficult to understand your situation. That is why I specifically asked whether you had tried any of the suggestions shared here or what your current status was. From what you shared, it seemed like you were ignoring the existing advice and not providing much information at all.
Also, please remember to follow the site rules. The name-calling is inappropriate and not acceptable here.
I didn’t “suggest” it, I said it. It’s the exact same issue as described here. It’s not something different.
Windows 11.
Desktop Version 1.80.115
Tried every suggestion on relevant forums.
Yes, I can run it without Admin privileges, but then it can’t update the components and adblock has no filter lists.
From what I can tell, there are many like me who aren’t finding the solutions purposed so far to be working either, so it needs to be flagged as an ongoing issue.
Admin privileges are required when manually updating components. Otherwise, the components should update according to Brave Browser’s setup (according to how Brave developers arranged that scheduling) ← IOW, “elevating privilege” is not normally required (says online info).
A rough guess: Some settings within the Local State file, govern that scheduling. Continuing my guess . . . I figure that either the Local State file is wounded, or access to that Local State file is wounded.
Top suspects (I guess, again):
Extensions
Internet Security / Anti-Virus / firewall / something blocking source(s) of network access
Internet browser update event bungled (executable and/or some kind of pieces/parts - not necessarily the components listed)
Sync of data, bungled (usually because of an interruption)
Windows update event bungled (“because”)
Windows OS Registry event bungled - somehow dinged by wrong info (my crude way of describing that something that was a “0” is now a “1”)
Whatever, Brave developers are aware ← for certain, and no indication, yet, of when a fix / the fix, will arrive on deck.
IMHO
PS1. I keep hoping that BB users wil establish routine backup of their BB data. Somehow, a lot of computer software users no long believe that data backups are necessary, until their data is lost.
PS2. Two methods for un-installing Brave Browser, when working toward making a new installation of BB:
This is helpful, thanks.
I did try disabling all extensions and my antivirus; no luck.
The update being bungled seems most likely, since that’s when the problem started. I relaunched it to update and it then it wouldn’t open. I ended up ending the process.
I did this and checked if my user had all permissions on brave.exe as well (for some reason I only had special permissions on the executable instead of full control), restarted the PC and it partially solved the problem. I can open Brave with Brave Shield working if I right click > open as admin, but it refuses to open if I go to compatibility and check the option to always run as administrator.
@Nilodex you’re kind of working the opposite of what you need to do. Do not open as admin. When you do that, you contribute to the issue that’s breaking things.
So two different things going on. The primary is when Brave is launching as admin it’s shuffling components and other things into admin only folders. Then when you try to open and use Brave normally it’s not able to access those components. This is where you have to reassign those permission levels for all the folders to go back to the normal user account so things can be accessed and updated properly.
The secondary is in the recent Chromium updates they have set things to automatically try to lower permissions. Automatically de-elevate users launching chrome elevated. When you have something like that checkbox where it only launches with admin, it’s then going with the new code that tries to de-elevate back to the normal user account. The contradicting rules based on you checking that box is where it may automatically close.
Of course in either way, opening or attempting to open in admin would mess with the permissions levels on your OS. So it kind of goes full circle.
For those able to understand the step by step instructions that has been given by Clifton, everything resolves once you change the permissions to the appropriate account level. Then just having to make sure they aren’t trying to launch as admin on any level.
Those who have difficulty with this process are finding that completely uninstalling Brave, making sure to also erase browsing history, and then installing tends to resolve all of the issues.
For the latter, I’m referencing having to check this box that appears in the uninstall process for Windows:
