Description of the issue:
A. I shifted to brave from google chrome. It was hard for me to shift because I liked chrome’s interface and appearance of its new tab page. I somehow got to know about this link “brave://new-tab-page/”. This is my new tab page now and it is like chrome’s.
Recently I have noticed that when I click on the search bar in the middle, brave crashes immediately. Can anyone help.
How can this issue be reproduced?
Under Settings>Appearance> turn on show home button toggle.
Chose add custom web address and then paste this link in it. brave://new-tab-page/
Create new tab and then try to search anything by clicking in search bar in the middle. It should crash.
Try to use the most recent version of Brave. Current is 1.63.169 and had resolved some issues for people. Curious to see if you’ll have better experience.
@chillsourabh thanks for checking, I just wanted to see if you noticed anything on that. Also have to admit, when I skimmed, I didn’t realize you were adding custom brave://new-tab-page/ nor did I know that it existed. So when testing just now, learned that existed.
Much like what you said, clicking in the search bar that appears there causes it to close. I’m supposing it’s because we’re pulling up a feature that isn’t official and isn’t really supposed to exist.
@Mattches you mind trying this? Don’t even have to go through all the options they mentioned. I guess typing in brave://new-tab-page/ to go to it will load a page similar to what I have below.
So essentially is just turning the NTP into Google’s NTP.
If I click on the Google search area to search something, the browser will crash. But I think part of what really confuses me a bit is it will show a crash report.
I click on Send Now and if I refresh, it will show I requested it to upload.
But when I reopen Brave, it doesn’t have Uploaded Crash Report ID and all as we would expect to see.
I’m expecting the crash is happening because the NTP shouldn’t exist within Brave, with it pulling Chrome/Chromium style. So perhaps some disconnect there, especially with what developers strip out from it. But that doesn’t explain why no crash reports are just disappearing, does it?
@chillsourabh as you can see, I’m tagging in official Browser Support person from Brave on this. That said, I think the reason is just that this page isn’t meant to exist. But I’ll leave it to them to look a bit more on things and see what can be done.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it very much. Also, I think everything on that new page is working as usual. The problem is only in the search bar.
Yes I can reproduce this issue. @chillsourabh,
As much as we appreciate the report, unfortunately we will be removing this page in the near future as it was only used for testing purposes.
No shade, but users stay doing the most and then wonder why they keep running into issues. Adding too many extensions, plug-ins, & random buried features.
Just keep it simple. Use the standard browser & enjoy high security with no random pop-ups / YT ads. Dark Mode & Screenreader are as fancy as I get. No issues save for the mute tab not working properly / linking audio.
Please don’t. As it would be the deal breaker for me. It won’t do any harm for normal people (most of them don’t even know about this anyway). Or at least add an custom brave page which would look and work like it.
