Brave Crashing Immediately

@ann4,
I am still hopeful that we will be able to find a solution to your original profile. That said, you can transfer most of your data from one profile to another in a couple of ways:

  1. You can individually export those the bookmarks and passwords data as HTML and CSV files respectively, then import them into the new profile.
  2. You can try copy and pasting all of your profile data manually/directly into your second profile.

The problem with option two is, while more efficient and will carry over more of your data, you also run the risk of carrying over whatever it is that is causing the browser to crash in your original profile (since we’re not clear on what that is yet). I would recommend going with option one for now, at least until we exhaust all of our options with respect to dealing with the crashes.

If you decide to go that route:

  • You can export your passwords by going to Settings —> Autofill --> Passwords --> [click three dots icon on top right] Export passwords, then import them using the same menu on your new profile.
  • You can export bookmarks by going to Settings --> Bookmarks --> click three dots icon on top right] Export bookmarks, then import them into your new profile using the same menu.

I don’t see how those options will work, they both require me to be able to open the Brave browser with my profile, yes? Or, am I missing something?

During the past few days, I’ve been frustrated with the exact same problem as @ann4. I tried all the troubleshooting @Mattches provided in this thread, and the results I got were also the exact same as @ann4.

I’m using a MacBook Pro M2 Max. Also, I’m running Ventura 13.4.1.

On June 21, I updated macOS from 13.4 to 13.4.1. It’s probably a coincidence, but the Brave immediate-crash problem began shortly after the 13.4.1 update. The Brave problem could have even first occurred the first time I tried to open Brave after the 13.4.1 update, but I’m not certain as I use several browsers, each for different purposes. According to the Apple website, 13.4.1 only “provides important security fixes.” Yet, even on my relatively fast Mac, installing surprisingly took a long time.

Please @Mattches and “Brave support team” provide more potential solutions soon. In the meantime, I won’t use Brave until after this severe problem is solved and my confidence in Brave is also restored. I’ve used Brave since 2017, but this crashing problem has been so time-consuming and frustrating that it could take a long time to have confidence in the stability of Brave.

Reinstalling 13.4 is also a pain, but one I’ll probably resort to one night after I’m done working for the day.

Today I will also start moving tabs that have had Brave (and Chrome, which has had similar but less severe problems as Brave) websites as their home for years to Safari because stability and reliability are more important to me than any of the seemingly nice bells and whistles of other browsers.

Thanks in advance,
Doug

It may be a coincidence, but this immediate crashing problem started around the time or shortly after I upgraded from macOS 13.4 to 13.4.1.

@ann4,
Apologies for the the late reply here and please disregard my last reply. @ann4 can you please try launching the browser in a new profile using the following command again as you did before:

open -a "Brave Browser.app" -n --args --profile-directory="newprofiletest"

Once the new profile opens, please go to brave://crashes in it — I was just told that you should still be able to see crash data from your original profile there.

It shows a list of crashes but no data, please see the screenshot. I did hit the Send Now button on several of the instances.

You have to exit Brave before it will send. So close Brave for like 30-60 seconds, then reopen and go back. You should see it uploaded and with the information needed.

Ok, I closed Brave and reopened. This is what I see now…

@ann4,
This is perfect. I will pass on these crash report IDs to the team for review. Hope to have more information for you soon.
