Brave crashing, even after new update v1.18.70

Brave has been crashing after opening in the last 24 hours:

**I thought perhaps it was a system issue So I:

1 Restarted computer
2 Re-opened Brave
3 Disabled extensions
Unfortunately the browser crashed again

4 Had to update via another browser (re-download the app)
Still no success in preventing crashes :disappointed:
**

Please help, I love using this browser:

Brave Version( v 1.18.70):

Perhaps the issue is related to updating to Mac OS Big Sur (I did that in the last week.)?

@Neppy11,
What exactly is the behavior of the crash? Does the browser launch then close immediately? Is there a crash/error message?

Yes the browser crashes immediately after opening.

There’s only a restore icon after re-opening. No crash or error message

I’ve got the same problem too. I updated brave last night. This morning, I cannot load it. I get the “Oh snap…” error message. I accessed this site using FF. Any ideas (besides uninstalling/reinstalling - I would like to keep my links, pswds etc.

Can I get everyone here to go to brave://crashes and click the Send now option under each of the crashes – note that you’ll only see these if you do not have Automatic crash reporting enabled. Then, can you copy/paste and reply here in the thread with the Crash report ID numbers so the team can take a look?

You Got it!

This problem continues today. I cannot access settingsBrave fail or anything else within Brace. I attached an image of the error message I get each time I start Barave. Please help me save my bookmarks, passwords etc.

I would if I could. But the browser crashes when ANYTHING is selected.

Hello Matches,

I tried to go to “brave://crashes” but the browser repeatedly crashes. It is non-functional. I would like to install a clean version, but not at the risk of losing my bookmarks, passwords etc. I would really appreciate advice on how I can salvage this data before I install a clean version of Brave-assuming that doing so will not result in the same situation I currently find myself in…

Thanks in advance,
Umrk

@Umrk @Neppy11 Would you be free for a screen-share via Zoom so I can help investigate the cause? If so, please email me direct at tmancey@brave.com so we can arrange a call. Thanks

Hello Terry,

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the problem I am experiencing. Unfortunately, I have been working from home for the past several months, which requires me to be on Zoom, WebEx, Skype, and Teams teleconferences. So, I do not have the free time to participate in a call with you.

However, I managed to resolve my problem by booting Windows into safe mode. This allowed me to access and export my bookmarks, passwords, and the corresponding cookies. So, I am no longer in a panic and do not need the help you so kindly offered.

For your reference, I attached a screenshot of the error message I received each time I started Brave and each time I tried to do anything within the browser. The browser started crashing immediately after I manually updated the browser. So, rather than downloading a copy of the same program that proved to be so unstable, I am going to wait until a new version is available.

Thanks again and I hope you have a nice weekend!

Umrk

HI. No problem and I am glad you resolved the issue. Unfortunately, the screenshots did not help however rest assured I am investigating to see if I can see any issues. Thanks, Terry

Macbook Air: macOS Big Sur 11.0.1
Brave: Version 1.18.70 Chromium: 87.0.4280.101 (Official Build) (x86_64)

Frequent crashes, unable to identify common precipitating event. When I restart I’m prompted to restore previous tabs, which works fine.

Related problem: I opened a Brave account to deal with all this. I received a confirm email. When I use the email address that confirmation was sent to, it comes back: " That address is not a [verified primary email]" This is not solved by restarting Brave.

Thanks for your help…

In the latest version (1.18.70) some corrupted web pages on Twitter page will be corrupted

@Gope,

Can you try disabling Hardware Acceleration in settings to see if this resolves the issue?

You’ll find this in Settings --> Additional Settings --> System --> Hardware Acceleration

Hi, I work in the ads team at Brave can you please let me know if upgrading to 1.18.75 fixes this issue. If not, would you be willing to screen-share so I can help investigate the issue, if this works for you please reach out via tmancey@brave.com Thanks, Terry

Terry,

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been updated for a while now. [from “About Brave”:
Version 1.18.75 Chromium: 87.0.4280.101 (Official Build) (x86_64)]

I think the frequency of crashes has diminished. Let me log this for a few days and get back to you. “Restore” has worked well, so it’s primarily a hassle, not a disaster.

That OK with you?

Any other suggestions welcome.

Stay healthy, stay safe.

Doug

Hi Tmancey,

Sorry I didn’t see this sooner. I’ve now updated and will check back in a couple days with an update on performance. Thanks for all your help!! :smiley:

HI, just sending an update. After a few days of use, I can confirm that the browser seems to be working fine now. Thanks a bunch. @tmancey , @Mattches + Brave team!!
