Brave opens, then crashes. - New windows 10 update synced to my computer the night before this started. - I have tried clearing cache, (thank god for shortcuts)… and also removing sync via the command line option that was provided on another thread. - Still crashing. any ideas for me to t-shoot next… use this browser ALL the time… really want it back. ! (the windows update installed the new “edge” software… and it popped up with new experience and you couldn’t exit it… not sure if that is related but now you have that tidbit
I too have this issue in macOS 10.15
@kelskamp,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Two things I would like you to try first (good job checking the Sync command line flag):
- Try disabling Hardware Acceleration – if you cannot make it to the menu fast enough (
Menu --> Advanced --> System --> Hardware Acceleration
), use the following solution found in this thread here and see if you can launch the browser this way: Error on yesterday's update [Windows "blank window" issue] - If this doesn’t work, it may be a certain extension you have installed causing the crash. You can test against this by launching a Private browsing window and/or creating a new browsing profile (
Menu --> Create new profile
) with no data in it and see if you get the same results.
still crashing after first one. Trying the creating new profile now. Can I import bookmarks and cache’d pwrds from my older profile by any chance?
Created new profile. Still crashing… here are the steps to what happens.
- Launch Brave
- Window comes up, UI paints and seems to stall - if I hit the top right corner to display menu I get an outline of the menu but no painting of that dialog box…
- it’s appearing to still be “loading something”…
- once I get the screen to fully paint, I can click on the top right menu and see settings… etc.
- within about 7 seconds of that last full screen paint it will crash. – there are no leftover artifacts in taskman either.
@kelskamp,
Thanks for the information. Would you mind going to brave://crashes
and giving me your Crash report ID?
Also if you haven’t had automatic crash reports enabled, make sure you also use the Send now
link on the crashes page to send the report to us.
where do i find that in the UI, or via command line - it only stays up for about 5-7 seconds after the screen paints when it crashes
NM found it… it’s on now …
I have found crashes in “crashpad” folder C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Crashpad\reports
is that what you need?
i have some .dmp files 4d4f79bb-2f4a-4d5c-821b-b4a8e0e40071.dmp
oh and I don’t get to a crash page, it actually exits out and closes… (fatal error kind of thing)
i think they mean to type that address brave://crashes
in Brave browser bar, not your local folder.
I am getting the same errors, same OS as the others. Here is my Crash report ID

@kelskamp,
Sorry i was not thinking – you would need to have the browser open long enough to do the requested actions. Can you try one more thing for me, while I confirm with some devs about the best way to get crash reports to us outside of the internal browser page?
Can you try downloading our Beta Build and see if the browser crashes in the same way? Note that installing/running Brave Beta will not overwrite or replace any of your existing Brave information. All Brave instances can run in parallel and independently from one another. This will help tell us whether or not its an issue with Brave iteslf, or with some data your old profile is loading.
will download and let you know…
okay downloaded the 64bit one, so far so good. How do I import my data (bookmarks, pwrds etc) from previous version of Brave?
@kelskamp,
So you can, but my fear is that upon doing this, you’ll import the same data that is causing the browser to crash on stable. That said, you can try by simply copying over your User data
directory from Stable --> Beta. To do this:
- In Windows, navigate to
C:\Users\[Your User Name]\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser
- Copy the
User data
folder here. - Go back up one level
to ~\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware
, then into theBrave-Browser-Beta
directory - Paste/replace the
User data
folder found here.
Now launch Brave Beta and you should see the profile data from stable inside Beta.
well I got my bookmarks but NOT the pwrds… that are cached, any way to try and pull those in?
@kelskamp,
Well, no you honestly should have gotten your passwords imported as well. Can you try going one level deeper and inside the user data folder, you’ll see a Profile 1
folder – unless you gave your browsing profile a different name, in which case the folder will have that name – and then copy/paste/replace the one in your Beta directory in the same way. If this doesn’t work still, let me know – I have a couple additional things to try.
sure I’ll try to do this tomorrow… Thanks!!
well that crashed the entire thing down… so now i’m back to where I started. (sigh)
I uninstalled the Beta, then reinstalled it… I have my “usernames” showing up but NOT the passwords.
