Brave close/crash on specifc domain

I am running newest version on Win10, a collegue of mine has same setup (only english language, I am on german), but it works for him.
i cant open this domain, the browser just closes.
http://www.vokuhilaperuecke.org/

Cant tell why, the html code is not that bad, it is a simple page.

Hi @jc1337

Could you provide a little more details on this issue?

Is that the browser language set to German or the system language set to German?

Do you have site isolation enabled in about:preferenes#security ? If so can you disable that and check?

Are you navigating to the page by clicking through the link or by opening in a new tab or copy pasting the URL? I can’t get the browser to crash when I set the browser language to German and copy paste the URL in a new tab. Here’s a recording of it

You can download Licecap which is a free tool to record the steps and share here. That way its much more easy to troubleshoot

I can. Language is set to “English (U.S.)” so I guess that doesn’t make a big difference. Brave version is:

Brave: 0.23.79
V8: 6.8.275.24
rev: 51b49051a779f0db94fbcfd0df5faca781299ea0
Muon: 8.0.7
OS Release: 6.1.7601
Update Channel: Release
OS Architecture: x64
OS Platform: Microsoft Windows
Node.js: 7.9.0
Brave Sync: v1.4.2
libchromiumcontent: 68.0.3440.84

OS is Windows-7.

And here is the video:

I tried clicking on the link and pasting it into the address bar - that’s in the video, I pasted the URL, started LICEcap, clicked into the address field and hit the Return button. About a second later Brave was gone.

I’m in Germany, too, but I prefer English, it’s easier for communication. Not sure whether Brave caught my location and uses German for something under the hood. At least the keyboard is still German: äöüßÄÖÜ

Edit: I noticed the open-lock-symbol when the page is loading. That gave me the idea to try again with Shields down but I seem to be unable to switch off Shields everywhere and since it’s not possible to switch off Shields for a site I have not yet visited - I just can’t. :frowning: So I set up everything like this:

and clicked on the link in the first post. Brave crashed.

Another edit: Different versions of windows… (hopefully) different language settings… meanwhile I’m REALLY curious about what the common factor is. Oh by the way, “Strict site isolation” is off here. Anything else that could be helpful and that I don’t think about?

One more edit: I also tried a “middle click” on the link to open it in a background tab. Brave crashed.

Language is set to German in Preferences. System is also German.

about:preferenes#security is not working, Site isolation is not active. This is my safe(?) tab:
security-tab

I enter the URL in the adress bar and try to navigate to it. But it is the same, when I click a link on Slack. It looks the same as in the video from tlaloc77. I can see the new title (html-title tag) but quickly closes the browser.

There’s a typo in there, about:preferences#security works for me and leads to the 4th option under Preference (“Sicherheit”, not “Schutz”).

Edit 1: I just tried to open www.vokuhilaperuecke.org in a new private tab. Brave crashed.
Edit 2: Then I tried to open www.vokuhilaperuecke.org in a new private tab with Tor. Brave crashed.

@sriram You can’t reproduce the crash in any way? Hmmm, is there any way to re-set everything to “factory defaults”? I trust that it would crash anyway and be back to my settings afterwards :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit 3: I just noticed a file named “debug.log” under C:\Users\…\AppData\Local\brave\app-0.23.79. It contains the following:
[0812/231306.132:ERROR:http_transport_win.cc(273)] WinHttpSendRequest: Es ist ein Sicherheitsfehler aufgetreten. As you can see, there is some German text in it, even though I set the language to “English (U.S.)” - so just changing the language setting is not enough, one needs an OS that is set to German. Which doesn’t fit to

And now I’m out of ideas. Unless said colleague has his/her whole OS set to English.

ah stupid me, didnt check the spelling

my colleague is on german windows as well. I also treid some different settings, but no change

Pity - I thought I had it  Thanks for the info!

Unfortunately i am unable to crash on any tabs. The page just loads normally for me. I tried setting the browser to German and load the page and it works just fine.

@jc1337 @tlaloc77 this is just a try. Can you try clearing your browser cache and try again? In case this doesn’t fix could you try renaming your brave folder under %appdata% to brave_old and launch the browser again. This will launch a clean profile and you can check if the crash still happens on the new profile.

Do let me know if this fixes the issue.

Clearing browser data with the following settings:

Got a warning (nice!! :D) and changed the settings (exceptionally I know what I’m doing) to this:
PrivateWarning

Then restarted brave and middle-clicked the offending link. A new (background) tab opens, then Brave crashes.

Edit 1: Next, renamed the folder …/Appdata/Local/brave to …/Appdata/Local/brave-old and …/Appdata/Roaming/brave to …/Appdata/Roaming/brave (got a warning, closed Brave, retry, OK), then clicked on the Brave-Icon on the desktop. Brave starts - I wonder how it found its .exe… But anyway, this seems to amount to a fresh installation: I got this view first (already changed the switch to off)

and clicked “Jetzt nicht”. OK so far. Went to community.brave.com… and before I do anything further, I send this edit off.

Edit 2: Next, I middle-clicked the link, a new tab opens… and Brave DOES NOT CRASH! Yay!! Finally some change!

OK, that may be a possible solution. But what may have caused it? I’m megacurious now!
@sriram any idea about how to proceed in finding the cause of the crashes?

Edit 3: Since I deleted the browser data right before the renaming, the old folders should not contain any browsing history and no passwords except the one for this community. How can I remove that one? Otherwise I’d be ready to pack up everything into a 7zip file and send it to someone - maybe to you? @sriram

But I’m also ready to fiddle with the settings until it breaks again - or not

@tlaloc77 ok that confirms its not a browser issue but its an issue with that particular profile.

If you are comfortable we could find out what errors are thrown when you see the crash. Could you install Git Bash. Just run the setup and click through next and complete the setup. No need to change the options in the setup. Once the setup completes open Git Bash window and run the following command ~/Appdata/Local/brave/Brave.exe. Make sure you delete the new profile that you created and rename brave_old to brave (this is the profile which was seeing crashes).

Launch browser from console and do the exact same steps that causes the crash. Once the browser crashes see if console captures any log?

On it. Gimme some minutes…

Edit: Installation of Git 2.18.0 for Windows is still running… since more than one and a half hour… I hope that’s normal… :anguished:

More than 2 hours and the progress bar was at its end after about 1 minute. The Cancel button is grayed out. I’m going to kill the installation via task manager.

Killed it. Looks like it got installed anyway.
So… I renamed the new directory under ~/AppData/Roaming to “brave-nocrash” and the old one back to brave.
Here is the content of the console window after the next crash:

Me@Mine MINGW64 ~

Now I’m going to try with the new profile directory…

Edit, again: And here is what happens if I middle-click on the offending link with the new profile:

Me@Mine MINGW64 ~
$ ~/Appdata/Local/brave/Brave.exe

Me@Mine MINGW64 ~
$ Crash reporting enabled

No report(s) at all. The first one doesn’t look healthy, but the errors don’t tell me anything. I think I continue with the new profile for some time, but I can switch back to the broken one quite easily.

My Brave is really picky w/websites. To get my godaddy email to open I have to shut down the filters to get it to load. It doesn’t like many of my chat forums either. To get the ad/cookie/tracking blocking one has to sacrifice some of these web pages that…have a lot of tracking/cookies/ads. Se La Vie.

got a new one: https://www.paydirekt.de/checkout/#/checkout/29fdb4a0-2486-40b4-8000-0127c653ad22

I tried to buy a ticket on eventim.de with payment method paydirekt (the german paypal competitor)
after setting all up and I am ready to pay and get redirected to paydirekt the browser crashes
