Brave browser still hangs when typing into the address bar

Description of the issue:
Not every time, but on every deployment of Windows that I use (3 different systems - a Win10 Desktop, a Win10 laptop, and a Win11 laptop (brand new as of 3 days ago)), using the URL bar to type an address will hang for 20 seconds or more for every character entered. This happens:

  • with and without any plugins enabled
  • with and without autocomplete enabled
  • in both regular and “private” browsing windows
  • for both known and unknown URLS

There are several cases in this community history documenting the exact issue that I am experiencing, none of which have solutions attached.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open brave in Windows and use normally
  2. Open a new tab
  3. Type into the URL bar

Expected result:
Characters display in the URL bar, with autocomplete suggestions (if turned on) or without (if turned off), but text entry can continue and echo back quickly. The actual result is that brave hangs for 20-60 seconds for each character typed.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.78.97

Additional Information:
This is clearly a perennial issue, will it get attention this time? It’s making brave essentially unusable.

@jacobg thanks for reporting. Can you share a screen grab of this happening? I’ll surface with the team right away. Is it happening on specific sites or across the board? Thank you!

I will try to snap a screenshot the next time it happens, but basically, I select the URL bar, type any character, the character fails to appear for 20-30 seconds, and the browser grays out. This happens on every site - or rather, with every typed character except for control/alt/shift keys.

As a kind of work around I can type the url into a text editor, and then paste it into the URL bar,

During these events, Windows will sometimes report “Brave is not responding” errors.

A screen cap would be super helpful. I’d also be curious to know if one of the other common suggestions for this resolves the issue – simply disable Graphics Acceleration in Settings System --> Graphics acceleration and see if this makes any difference.

Here’s a screenshot. I’ve disabled graphics acceleration and will let you know if the issue persists. I’m pretty sure that that (graphics acceleration disablement) was recommended the last time I reported this issue, and it didn’t solve it. Trying it now.

FYI, I didn’t include my tabs (vertical, on the right side of my window) because of data privacy concerns.

All I typed in the URL bar in this screenshot was the letter ‘a’ - after 30 seconds it returned with the recommendation of amazon.com

Okay - I have validated that the behavior persists with graphics acceleration disabled.

Another observation that I’ve made about it is that if the URL bar accepts and echoes the first character immediately (which it does much of the time), then it will accept every other character typed into it immediately. If, on the other hand, it hangs on the first character, it will hang on every character typed in thereafter. So when the behavior is present, if I type in ‘https://x.com’ the ‘h’ will echo after about 20-30 seconds, then the ‘t’ will echo after about 20-30 seconds, then the next ‘t’ will echo… etc., and it will continue to hang on every character until the keyboard input is completed. It seems to actually capture all of the input, though…

@jacobg I expect that this behavior does not occur if you:

  • Launch a guest profile (Menu --> More tools --> Guest profile, then close your original profile window)
  • Create and use a fresh profile ( Menu --> More tools --> Add profile, then close your original profile)
  • Download/install/run the Beta build of the browser?

So, one of the systems on which I experience this issue is literally brand new as of this week, so the profile that I’m using cannot get fresher than that.

I am open to trying out the beta version of the browser… let me see if I can install it along-side the current version to check its behavior.

Okay - so I just now fired up a guest profile (which started up a private browsing window), and was able to replicate the behavior on the first try. This screenshot is after my having type ‘asdf’ into the URL bar, noticed the behavior, and opened snipping tool to get a screen grab. Brave is hung here.

FYI, I’ve got the beta build installed and will check it out as well.

I’ve managed to replicate the error using the Beta build as well. Selected an existing tab and attempted to type a URL into it, and it hung.

Hey @Mattches - I’m really hoping that there is some kind of stack trace or something that I can run which will help to isolate the issue. I feel like I’ve exhausted the available user-level resources for testing and isolating this issue. Do you guys have an internal tool that you use for this kind deeper investigation? I’m happy to get as involved as necessary (within the confines of my fairly busy schedule) to help get this fixed. Not that you need my bona-fides, but I do work in technology…

Thank you for testing and reporting.
Are you by chance using a Citrix workspace as these users here were?

If not, let me ask the team about next steps here.

As it happens, I AM using the Citrix Workspace App. I see from that other thread that some folks who have disabled the Citrix app are no longer seeing the behavior. I may do this as a test for a couple of hours, but I’m basically ALWAYS running citrix for work, so that workaround won’t do me for the long haul.

Looking at the parent incident, it seems that this has something to do with clipboard content. I will play around with clearing my clipboard before typing into the URL bar for brave… or maybe using a clipboard manager to see how that affects things.

Hi there. It’s the same here. Using Ubuntu Linux/Gnome and Brave 1.79.119 (Official Build) (64-Bit).

I’ve turned off autocompletion entirey, too. But the problem still occurs.

I’ve also tried it with a new, empty profile. But that doesn’t help either.

I don’t know anything about “Citrix”. I should not be using it.
