Brave browser fails to start: Profile lock issue across multiple systems

I’ve been using the Brave browser for quite some time now. Initially on one system, later on a second one. At first, there were no issues, except for a dialogue box that popped up almost every time, stating that my Brave profile was locked due to being active on another system. This dialogue box allowed me to unlock the profile and start the browser. All was well. However, for several months now, this dialogue box hasn’t been appearing, and the browser fails to start.

Upon checking journalctl, I came across the following message:

Feb 13 22:39:08 fedora-2.fritz.box systemd[3283]: Started app-gnome-brave\x2dbrowser-5217.scope - Application launched by gnome-shell.

The only workaround I’ve found to start the browser is:

rm .config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/SingletonLock

However, this becomes inconvenient over time. I had hoped that this issue would be resolved through later updates, but since that hasn’t happened yet, I’m writing this post.

Additional useful information:

  • All my systems (now 3) are running the latest Fedora.
  • Installed Brave version:
❯ dnf list installed | grep brave
brave-browser.x86_64 1.62.162-1 @brave-browser
brave-keyring.noarch 1.14-1 @brave-browser
