Brave blocks weather map's radar layer on parts of Wunderground.com

Description of the issue:
On Wunderground.com, when visiting the page of an individual weather station, like the one linked below, the radar layer does not load on the embedded map:
https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/wy/moran/KWYMORAN11

Cannot duplicate in any other browser. Can still duplicate in a Brave session without any extensions running, and with Shields turned off.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/wy/moran/KWYMORAN11

Expected result:
Map with Radar option pre-selected by default shows weather radar.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.50.121

Additional Information:

  • If you subsequently click the Satellite tab above the map, the radar layer will render…
  • …and if you then click back to the Radar tab, the radar layer will render
  • But that’s the only way to get the radar layer to render on this page in Brave.

@100WattWalrus I just tested and have no issues while using Brave. I will say I tried testing the site on Chrome and Edge just to compare. On Chrome, it took several seconds for the map to load, it was incredibly slow. Then I went to Edge and the map seemed to never want to load. I just tabbed back and it had an ad appear I had to close and then the map appeared.

So yeah, not sure if you’re seeing delays like I did on those other two browsers. I’m on Windows 11 Pro. What I’d like to ask is:

  1. Have you tried with and without Shields?

  2. What are your Shields settings like?

  3. Have you tried the page in a Private Window?

Thanks for testing @Saoiray . Have tried without Shields (which are set to defaults). Have tried Private window. Here’s a short video showing what happens. (I also get a gray layer that makes the radar layer hard to see, but I think that’s supposed to be a cloud-cover layer). But I can’t duplicate the problem in any other browser (Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Orion), and I can reproduce it in every Brave profile.

Here’s a short video: https://i.imgur.com/PLBmP8P.mp4

I also pulled out my ancient WIN10 netbook (in the process learning that switching to a fiber connection has cured a lot of its speed issues - wow!) to try to reproduce the problem in Brave for Windows (which wouldn’t update from 1.45.133), and didn’t have this problem, so it seems to be specific to Brave > Mac.

On the WIN machine, the (apparent) cloud layer did not appear on the Radar view — only on the Satellite view.

So…
Brave on Mac (as seen in video):

  • No radar layer
  • switch to Satellite > Radar layer appears (no “cloud” layer)
  • Switch back to Radar
RESULT: Radar layer appears, immediately followed by “cloud” layer

Brave (1.145.133) on Windows 10 (and any other browser):

  • Radar layer loads in Radar view on first try
  • Switch to Satellite
RESULT: “Cloud” layer, no radar layer.

@100WattWalrus thanks for sharing. That’s interesting. May as well have you test few extra little things, just to have it ruled out for when Support comes back after tomorrow.

  • Can you try to create a new browser profile and see if it happens there as well?

  • Maybe clear cookies and site data? At least for that site and see if it make any difference.

  • Would you mind trying to install Brave Beta or Brave Nightly and see if it replicates on those?

I’m mainly trying to attack from some of the usual culprits which are:

  • Extensions

  • Bad cookies

  • Some setting that was changed

  • Shields scripts

  • Some bug in the current version of Brave that might be fixed in next update

We’ve kind of tested on some of that, but steps I mentioned will help narrow down or eliminate possibilities. I doubt firewall or internet security programs would affect what you’re seeing, but that’s only thing I haven’t listed. So if none of those, it will take some more investigation and for Support to see if they can replicate issue on that site on Mac. If so, figuring out what the heck is going on in Mac version, lol

Also which filter lists are enabled in brave://adblock ?

@Saoiray
I didn’t create a new profile, but I did test in a profile that I keep clean — no extensions, no bookmarks, nothing, with cache and cookies cleared. That profile has never been to a wunderground.com URL before.

@fanboynz
Fanboy’s Mobile Notifications List is the only thing checked in brave://adblock
Create Custom Filters field includes “##.sticky-player-background” — which appears to be a default because it’s in all my Profiles.

@Saoiray @fanboynz bump.

@100WattWalrus sorry been no response. So you’re still having the issue? I know I’m just another User. Had tested with Windows and relayed my experience. Beyond doing a lot of the basic troubleshooting, which you did some, I’m kind of limited. Hopefully @fanboynz will be able to follow-up. But I’ll also tag @Mattches on here in case he can try to test on Mac and all. The two of them should be able to better help.

What I will try to confirm with you though, as it’s been a while.

  • Which version of Brave are you on? (want to make sure you’re on current)

  • Issue is still happening?

  • This is on your Mac only?

  • Have you tried with Shields off to see if it makes a difference?

  • Do you know if you have anything that you changed in brave://flags? If so, those are shared between profiles. Might be interesting to see if anything active there or even in your content filtering for Shields that you have active on Mac but not on Windows.

  • You never tested on Nightly or Beta to see if it replicates there, right?

  • Which version of Brave are you on? (want to make sure you’re on current)

1.51.118

  • Issue is still happening?

Yes

  • This is on your Mac only?

Repeating from above:

Brave on Mac (as seen in video):

  • No radar layer
  • switch to Satellite > Radar layer appears (no “cloud” layer)
  • Switch back to Radar
RESULT: Radar layer appears, immediately followed by “cloud” layer

Haven’t tried again on Windows, and I’m having a hell of a day, so it won’t be today, but at the time of the last post it was: Brave (1.145.133) on Windows 10 (and any other browser):

  • Radar layer loads in Radar view on first try
  • Switch to Satellite
RESULT: “Cloud” layer, no radar layer.
  • Have you tried with Shields off to see if it makes a difference?

Yes, have tried. No dice.

  • Do you know if you have anything that you changed in brave://flags?

Nope.

You never tested on Nightly or Beta to see if it replicates there, right?

Nope.

And to clarify: I have tried incognito, and I also have a profile I keep pristine (no extensions, etc.), and it happens there too.
