Description of the issue:
Brave appears to be automatically closing idle tabs. I have a number of tab groups that I keep open all the time. Occasionally when I go to access one of the tabs that I expect to be always available, it will be gone. It seems like they are tabs that I have not accessed in a few days.
How can this issue be reproduced?
- Open several tabs.
- Put them in groups.
- Wait for them to disappear.
Expected result:
The tabs remain open indefinitely.

Additional Information:
I have sync enabled set to sync everything. There are 12 devices syncing involving all OSes except Android.
Issue has only been noticed on Windows, but I may have not been paying attention on the others.

To clarify, you’re saying that the tabs are completely closed? As if you clicked the x
on them to close them out?
Correct. The tabs are gone.
Do you have any extensions installed in the browser at this time?
Yes, Coinbase Wallet, Leap Cosmos Wallet, Proton Pass password manager.

Those particular extensions probably wouldn’t cause the issue with auto-closing tabs. I’m assuming that you don’t have any browsing data set to be cleared “on exit” then I’m not sure why they would be closing. Can you confirm that this only happens to inactive tabs that are grouped?
Additionally, I’d be interested to see if you see this behavior in a fresh profile as well. Can you try testing this by creating a new browser profile (Menu --> More tools --> Add profile
), add some tabs to groups and let them go inactive and test to see if they also close on their own?

Also, I have Memory Saver enabled. As part of trying to prevent this from happening, I added several sites to the “Always keep these sites active” list. Some of the sites in that list have been closed, so trying to white list them didn’t work.

Thank you for testing. Please let me know if the tabs in the groups in the new profile also close after some time.
Update: I have not had another incident of the tab closing either in my existing profile or the test one I created. Is there a log somewhere that I could look for if/when it happens again?
I’m actually wondering now if this may be related to Sync. Can you try taking the device that is closing the idle tabs off the Sync chain for a little while (in your original profile) just to test and see if the issue still occurs?
Yes. I will take it out. Interesting that when I look at the sync settings, this device (my main laptop and the one that’s had the issues) is listed three times. I don’t see any other duplicates. I will remove them all.
When I removed my laptop from the sync chain, all my tab groups disappeared. They were available in History in the recent tabs list.
Can you restore those groups and then continue to check in and see if they get deleted while not on the Sync chain as was happening before?
