Brave 1.79.118 doesn't receive input from keyboard

I create this topic to report an issue.

I installed the latest version of Brave (1.79.118) this morning. When I typed in the search bar, no character appeared, but I was able to paste an URL. Also, I couldn’t type in any textbox.

Update: Ironically, the only combination that I can use is Ctrl + T, which opens a new tab.

I have been using Brave on Debian 12 KDE Plasma 5.27.5. I created this topic using Firefox.

Same here.

I’ve suspected that a prior Chromium update somehow impacts a subsequent Brave update. I experienced this before and it was many months before I was able to release an update “hold” on Brave. See: “Aw snap error code 5 after install of Brave version 1.73.89 on Raspberry Pi5”

Update: If I activate the henkan 「変換」 I am able to create input although the final Enter key action does not work. Moreover, input via henkan on Chromium browser Version 136.0.7103.113 (Official Build) built on Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm) (64-bit) now does not work although roman character input does (obviously, that’s how I am creating this). I’m leaning towards a Chrome engine update as the culprit.

Same problem here.

Brave 1.79.119
Debian 12 bookworm

Interestingly, when starting brave with firejail with the --nodbus option, keyboard input then works.

Could the issue be related to dbus in a way?

Here’s my workaround launch script:

#!/bin/bash
/usr/bin/firejail --nodbus brave-browser

same problem here with me

Same issue here, but only when DaVinci Resolve Studio is fully started, and only for the first 5 minutes or so.

When first starting Resolve, the Project Manager window opens. At this point, Brave still receives keyboard input.

After selecting a project, Resolve fully starts. At this point Brave can no longer receive keyboard input, not even in the address bar.

What’s weird is that for a few minutes, every time I press the Enter key on the keyboard, the following page opens in Brave: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/training

After about 5 minutes or so, this enter behaviour stops and Brave receives keyboard input just fine

For those 5 minutes, this even takes focus away from LibreWolf. I can barely write this message in LibreWolf because Brave keeps opening that /training page every time I hit Enter. So weird.

OS

I’m running Brave on Garuda Linux “Broadwing”, Mokka edition with KDE and Wayland.
This distro is based on Arch.

Replying to myself because I found the solution, and I wanted to also post it just in case someone else is experiencing this.

The issue was that I was running Brave with XWayland, I was starting it like this:

#!/bin/bash
export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia
export MOZ_DISABLE_RDD_SANDBOX=1
export VDPAU_DRIVER=nvidia
export GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm
export __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11
export GDK_BACKEND=x11

/opt/brave-bin/brave \
--enable-features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiVideoEncoder,UseOzonePlatform \
--ozone-platform=x11 \
--ignore-gpu-blocklist \
--enable-zero-copy \
--disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder \
"$@" &

The fix:

To fix the issue, I created a new .desktop file by copying the original Brave desktop file, changing the name to Brave(Wayland) and then the Exec line to this:

Exec=env LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=nvidia MOZ_DISABLE_RDD_SANDBOX=1 VDPAU_DRIVER=nvidia GBM_BACKEND=nvidia-drm __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland GDK_BACKEND=wayland GTK_IM_MODULE=wayland QT_IM_MODULE=wayland XMODIFIERS= /opt/brave-bin/brave --enable-features=WaylandWindowDecorations,VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiVideoEncoder,UseOzonePlatform --ozone-platform=wayland --ignore-gpu-blocklist --enable-zero-copy --disable-features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder %U

I was running it with XWayland because I was trying to find a way in which hardware acceleration actually works for video decoding.

To be able to actually watch youtube 4k videos without dropping lots of frames, I had to come up with this solution that opens the current youtube video in MPV rather than playing it on the page: https://github.com/dariusmihai/userscript-youtube-play-in-mpv

I’m on a laptop with i9-11900H, 32Gb RAM and RTX3080.
