Bookmarked links folder inside another folder is not opening with middle mouse

Used to open many links just by middle clicking on a folder, that ain’t working anymore.
Only try to open the first folder and not other ones inside it.

Simply put: if the folder is the first one - it opens, if the folder is the second and so on it wont.

before march 5 update i could simple middle click any folder anywhere and it would open all the links inside it.

Now only by rmb and open all.

windows 10 22h2, last version of Brave.

Tested with different mouse’s same result.

Thank you for your time.

Same problem. Before I always opend multiple tabs at once clicking middle mouse on a booknmarks folder, doesn’t work anymore.

Can’t say that I’ve used this method before to open multiple bookmarks/tabs from nested folders. However, I do see that you can do this from the bookmarks bar, but not the nested folders within as @Steem describes.

I will ask whether or not this functionality was removed intentionally (I suspect not). That said, you can still right-click and open all the tabs within the folder by selecting Open all from the context menu (this works for all bookmarks folders, nested or not):

Wow, reading their posts/thread about it they seem to be digging on in, investigating.

Thanks for the update. I really love this feature and use it many times a day. The only thing to improve on it would be to allow the user to set the number of links that can be opened at once, instead of a warning pop up on the limit.

Seems to be fixed now!

Platform: Brave 1.77.0 with Chrome 135.0.7049.100
Windows 10 Home x64 22H2

In the bookmarks manager (brave://bookmarks/, or Shift+Ctrl+O):

  • Left-click on a bookmark: nothing happens.
    • Have to double left-click on a bookmark to open a new tab.
    • Expected: single left-click opens a new tab.
  • Middle-click on a bookmark: a new tabs opens, as expected.
  • Middle-click on a bookmark folder: scroll mode is activated, the mouse pointer turns into a cross-hair, and moving the mouse turns the mouse pointer into an arrow and scrolls the bookmark tree.
    • Must left-click to exit scroll mode.
    • Expected: All bookmarks in the folder should open in new tabs.
  • Right-click on a bookmark or bookmark folder: context menu appears.

In the bookmarks menu (menu → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmarks section):

  • Left-click on a bookmark: current tab gets replaced.
  • Left-click on a bookmark folder: nothing happens.
    • Expected: Folder node in tree expands to show bookmarks and bookmark subfolders.
  • Middle-click on a bookmark: new tab opens.
  • Middle-click on a bookmark folder: new tabs open for each bookmark under just that folder.
  • Right-click on a bookmark or bookmark folder: context menu appears.

In the bookmarks toolbar (show bookmarks = always):

  • Left-click on a bookmark: current tab is replaced.
  • Middle-click on a bookmark folder: new tabs open for each bookmark under just that folder (no recursion into bookmark subfolders).
  • Right-click on a bookmark or bookmark folder: context menu appears.

Left, middle, and right clicking have inconsistent behaviors in different bookmark elements in Brave, plus differ from how Firefox behaves. In Firefox, I am used to middle-clicking on a bookmark folder to have all bookmarks within that folder open in new tabs. Brave users indicate this is how it used to work in Brave, but not anymore.

Having to right-click on a bookmark or bookmark folder to get a context menu is a workaround, but more clumsy with more mouse clicking than the ease and speed of just middle-clicking.

There may be a bug in Chrome, but the chrome (small “c”) of Brave can be independent of Chrom(e|ium). For example, Microsoft Edge which is a Chromium variant has 2 effects when middle-clicking on a bookmark folder:

  • Goes into scroll mode.
  • And opens new tabs for each bookmark in the folder.

Edge’s chrome has its own distinct behaviors as well as Edge having some different settings and features, and middle-clicking in Edge does open new tabs for all bookmarks under a bookmark folder, and matches what middle-clicking on a bookmark folder does in Firefox (and probably other web browsers).

First, assuming it’s not a typo, the latest build of the browser at this time is v1.77.101 – please make sure you update to the latest build to ensure that you have the latest fixes applied, which may affect the behavior you’re seeing.

That said, a few things to note here:

This is because clicking on a bookmark selects it so that it can be managed – further, holding Ctrl or Shift allows you to select multiple bookmarks at once, so that they can be moved or deleted. This would not be possible if a single left-click opened the bookmark.

This is because the page you are on, similar to what was stated above, is primarily used to manage/organize your bookmarks. Many users have several hundreds or thousands of bookmarks – the middle-click scroll option is a way to quickly navigate through them.

This is because you don’t need to click on it in order to expand the node – simply hovering over the folder will display the contents of that folder:

While I understand that more customizable functionality may be desired and will likely be added in future updates to the browser, all the required functionality of the bookmarks (bar, page, sidebar, etc) already exists.

  • If you want to open a single bookmark from the bookmarks bar, drop down menu (from main menu) or sidebar in a new tab: Use Ctrl + Click or use the context menu.
  • If you want to open all links in a bookmarks folder on the bookmarks bar, drop down menu, or sidebar in a new tab(s): Use middle-click, Ctrl + Click or use the context menu

Sorry, but adding 2 input devices (keyboard + mouse) is a clumsy workaround. Just a middle-mouse click would be easier, faster, and intuitive (as it matches what other web browsers have).

Brave devs have their bias. So do users.
