Aw snap error code 5 after install of Brave version 1.73.89 on Raspberry Pi5

Description of the issue:
AFTER install Brave 1.73.89 on a Raspberry Pi5 I get Aw Snap error with error code 5.
This happens about 2 to 3 minutes after opening the browser.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.
Install Brave version 1.73.89 on a Raspberry Pi5. I updated mine from 1.71.123 which WORKS and does NOT cause this Snap error message.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Expected result:
No error message. Able to display any web page without the Brave Browser quitting with this error.

Reproduces how often:
EVERY TIME. I believe I also updated Brave one more time to 1.73.91 to see if that would fix this but it did NOT.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Raspberry Pi OS Brave Version 1.73.89

Additional Information:
Using a USB boot drive which has Brave 1.71.123 does NOT generate this problem.
Brave is unusable at version 1.73.89.

Re “Aw, Snap”:

Be prepared to recover:

How to manually back up your Bookmarks as an HTML file

Two ways to get to the Bookmarks Manager.

One way:

  1. Launch Brave and open the Main menu: newmenuicon.png
  2. Select Bookmarks --> Bookmarks Manage
  3. Open the More options menu at the top right
  4. Select Export and choose where you want to store the exported file.

Another way:

  1. In a new Brave Browser window, go to: brave://bookmarks
  2. Locate the “Organize” (vertically-arrayed 3-dot) menu button in the upper-right area of the window; click on that
  3. You should get a pop-up menu, in which you click on the “Export bookmarks” selection and choose where you want to store the exported file.

The exported file name: “bookmarks.html”

Be sure to store a copy on an external drive.

Maybe create a folder: “Brave Browser bookmarks files”

And name each backup, contained therein, in chronological order:

20241121_Thursday_BrvBrsBkmksBkup.html"

How to Back Up Passwords that are stored by Brave Browser

Scrolling down the webpage at:

https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018185951-How-do-I-use-the-built-in-password-manager

A note states:

“Export Passwords - Selecting Download file will export all credentials you’ve saved in your browser as a .CSV file onto your system. Note that anyone who has access to your system will be able to open and view this file, so it is recommended that you delete this file once you’ve used the file for its intended purpose.”

In order to encrypt that .CSV file:

https://www.crucial.com/articles/pc-users/how-to-password-protect-a-folder

https://nordvpn.com/blog/how-to-password-protect-a-zip-file/

https://www.winzip.com/en/features/security/password-protection/

And be sure to copy that compressed and encrypted file, to an external drive that you safely store.

I recommend routine (every 24 hours) backups of the important “BraveSoftware” data folder. The sub-folders of that “BraveSoftware” data folder, contain the user Profile(s).

The value of backing up that “BraveSoftware” data folder: Because that backup retains the organization of the various items - so you will know: What, is/was Where.

Where that “BraveSoftware” data folder is located

Linux OS:

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to: “brave://version”

Scroll down to “Profile Path”

The location of the “BraveSoftware” data folder is in that “Profile Path”.

The find-the-Profile-Path method for locating that folder, takes into consideration, that the “BraveSoftware” data folder location can vary, among the Linux OS installations (Debian, Mint, PiOS, Ubuntu, etc.).

Clear cookies, cache, history, etc.

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://settings/clearBrowserData

Select the Advanced tab

Set Time range to “All time”

ENABLE everything except:

  • Passwords and other sign-in data

(Myself, I would NOT make that exception)
(because I would have a backup prepared.)
(In other words, be prepared.)

Click on the “Clear data” button

Locate the Graphics / Hardware Acceleration switch in Brave Browser Settings, and test: Enabled / Disabled

Create an additional Brave Browser Profile and test - be sure to close all Brave Browser windows, before opening a window via that new profile.

Re: “If you’re getting the “Aw, Snap” error or another error code instead of a webpage”
I am getting web pages and Tabs and after about 1 to 3 minutes I get this error.
I have tried the suggested fixes at:

None work. This is a BUG introduced by Brave version 1.73.89 . This did NOT happen before the update of Brave.

The same issue happens on:
Browser Brave version: Version 1.73.91 Chromium: 131.0.6778.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Raspberry Pi5 desktop version:

rapi5@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="12"
VERSION="12 (bookworm)"
VERSION_CODENAME=bookworm
ID=debian
HOME_URL="https://www.debian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="https://www.debian.org/support"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugs.debian.org/"

Thanks for that info. I had already verified that with a friend who installed the Brave Browser on his Raspberry Pi5.
I am hoping someone who is in charge of Brave on Raspberry’s sees my problem report.

I am having the exact same problem except that instead of 2-3 minutes it is more like 30 seconds and then “Aw, snap!” with error code 5.

RPI 5 running Debian bookworm. 1.71.123 works flawlessly. I am only able to write this using the Chromium browser.

Try: In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://settings/content/javascript

Scroll down that javascript settings page to Allowed to use javascript

Click the Add button

Enter [*.]brave.com as the site . . . but do not Enable the following:

  • Current Private session only

Click the Add button

Repeat those steps for:

  • [*.]amazonaws.com
  • [*.]bravesoftware.com

Lets hope someone responsible for the Brave Browser on a Raspberry Pi 5 sees this problem report and does SOMETHING about this!!
I have a friend who also was able to recreate this problem. He installed Brave 1.73.91 (which I confirmed still has the same problem)…

Thanks for the tip however the Brave Browser will issue the “Aw snap error code 5” BEFORE all these settings can done.
Also I believe Javascript IS enabled for all Web sites.

Usually, in a Linux OS command line, you can start Brave Browser with one of the following commands:

brave -n --args --incognito --no-experiments --disable-extensions --disable-gpu

or

brave-browser -n --args --incognito --no-experiments --disable-extensions --disable-gpu

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to: “brave://version”

Scroll down to “Command line”

The beginnings of that command line character string, will indicate which command to use.

With Brave Browser running, in a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://flags

Click the “Reset all” button.

Perform backup procedures for bookmarks, passwords, etc. as previously mentioned.

Clear caches, cookies . . . as previously mentioned.

Next, disable all extensions that you may have installed. (I would also remove them.)

Quit Brave Browser. Try a normal start procedure for Brave Browser.

If failing: getting the Aw Snap error - then quit. Wait a moment. Start Brave Browser from the command line, again.

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://settings/reset

and reset the Brave Browser settings.

I have the same issue with Brave 1.73.101 on latest Raspbian. I have removed the profile, reset the configuration but the issue is still reproducible. Please let me know, if you need more info.

I will switch to Vivaldi browser, because Brave is unusable right now.

Thanks a lot and please enjoy your day!

Thanks for the reply. Too bad someone does NOT fix this recreatable problem.

Have you tried this on a Raspberry pie?

I keep hoping that one of the Raspberry Pi afficionados(sp?) will test.

So do I but it seems NO ONE from the Raspberry Pi crowd AND those using Brave on it and are following this forum. This should be a SIMPLE problem for them to recreate. The Pi operating system people will say the problem is with Brave and the Brave people will say the problem with the Pi operating system, so I am losing hope. Right now I am NOT updating any changes on my Raspberry operating system because it will include the changes which will cause Brave to crash.

Yes, and it has been that way for over a month. I’ve tried completely removing it and reinstalling, which doesn’t help at all. It’s clearly a bug in the Brave browser itself. I’m about to give up on it and move all of my bookmarks and links over to Chromium, which seems to work fine.

I have the same issue with 1.73.104.

For some reason I could not find your comment at
https://community.brave.com/t/aw-snap-error-code-5-after-install-of-brave-version-1-73-89-on-raspberry-pi5/583772/17

You mention “I have the same issue, but with all browsers”.
It was my experience when I had the latest updates that the Chromium Browser did NOT cause the ‘Aw snap error code 5’
error message and a subsequent shut down. I had a friend test this with Brave version: 1.73.104 Chromium version: 131.0.6778204.
Chromium did NOT croak.

I wiped and reloaded my RPi5 fresh. Firefox and Chrome work fine, Brave still crashes so I edited my post.

Thanks for the update. So it appears this IS a Brave Browser bug.
It seems that no one from the Brave browser community is BRAVE enough to take this bug on? :sunglasses:
… or even view this forum??
