Allow Key Combinations Using F13–F24

Hi there,

I’d like to suggest enhancing Brave’s shortcut support, at brave://settings/system/shortcuts, by enabling key combinations involving F13 through F24—for example: Ctrl + F13, Shift + F14, or Alt + Cmd + F15.

Brave currently supports using F13–F24 as standalone shortcuts, which is a great step. However, allowing these keys to be used with modifiers would dramatically expand their usefulness, especially for users who rely on programmable keyboards or remapping tools like Karabiner-Elements (macOS), AutoHotkey / PowerToys (Windows), or XKB (Linux).

Here’s why this matters:

  • Modifier + F13–F24 combos offer hundreds of clean, OS-safe shortcut possibilities.
  • These keys are not reserved by Windows, macOS, or Linux—making them ideal for custom workflows.
  • Power users often map unused keys (like Caps Lock or Fn layers) to these function keys for quick actions and automation.
  • Brave already detects F13–F24—adding support for combinations would unlock their full potential.

In contrast, “Hyperkey” style combos (e.g., Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Win or Cmd + Shift + Opt + Ctrl) are increasingly having limitations, in particularly on Windows:

  • Windows 11 reserves many Ctrl + Alt + Shift + Win + [Key] combos for launching Office apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • macOS uses Cmd + Shift + P or Cmd + Shift + Ctrl combos in system-wide services and accessibility shortcuts.
  • Popular apps like VS Code, Slack, and Photoshop already bind complex Hyperkey-style combos for their own use.
  • These combinations are more prone to conflicts, accidental triggers, or being intercepted by the OS—limiting their reliability.

By contrast, F13–F24 remain an untapped and OS-safe space that users can consistently depend on for custom workflows, especially when modifiers are allowed.

Thanks for considering this suggestion! I’d be happy to test or provide feedback if helpful.
