Aggregate Topic: Lost Passwords in July 2024 update

Dear, Carlos,

I could not have said it better myself! You’re spot on in everything you said.
I guess since Brave knows that we can find other ways to get our passwords, they’re delaying fixing their issues, which makes it worse for them not to care about us, Brave’s users, and ‘supporters’ of their platform.
The worst part is that there’s no way to find a direct contact, email, etc. to contact them. When having a platform and users, there must always be a contact place the users can go to when having issues, and they’ve failed miserably. I trusted them to keep my passwords safe and reachable!

Dear Saoiray,

Thank you, however, that jargon talk is hard for me to absorb, being 66 with no computer technical knowledge other than using it as a user is hard for me to follow all that. I hope Brave launches another update with the fix, instead of us, users, trying to figure out things. Thanks.

Hello ! I’ve update Brave :
Version 1.68.134 Chromium: 127.0.6533.88 (Build officiel) (64 bits)
I found my passwords, it seems that a fix has been applied. However, will the search bar return to the password manager ?
Thanks to the development teams for working on this issue.

How did you update? Thanks.

@Rainbuckets go to About Brave in your hamburger menu, which is the image button. It will check for updates there.

Found it, thank you. I was looking and looking!

And everyone, new update is out which should fix this at least for people on Windows.

I mention “at least for Windows” because it is related to https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/24853 which only mentioned Windows. Not sure if will fix for Mac and Linux. Will need people to see if updates are available and if it resolves for you

Ok, I know you said Windows, but I am confirming that this did not work on a Mac. Thanks

@Mattches @steeven can you check with the team and find out how the update works. As I referenced in the Github link, it seems to only mention Windows. Do we know how the fix is coming along for Mac and Linux? Or if this current update should fix for all?

Saoiray,

It’s all jargon to me… I’m 66, can’t figure out all that so…

There has been Brave update today to
Version 1.68.134 Chromium: 127.0.6533.88 (Official Build) (arm64) but passwords are still missing on macOS. They are still there in the SQLite database though.

@lmz then can ignore some of the possible tips and things to try. You are on Windows, right?

If so, just make sure you update Brave. You can do that by going to hamburger menu (which looks like image) and then go to HelpAbout Brave and it should check for update and manually do it. Then it will give you a prompt to restart the browser. Once that’s done, things should be back to normal for you.

Sorry for the late response time here. So to update everyone:

For Windows users:
This issue should be resolved with the latest update (released this morning) — please ensure you go to Menu --> Help --> About Brave to update your browser.

For macOS and Linux users:
We are still looking into what’s required to fix this for these platforms — the hope was that the same fix would resolve the issue for all platforms but that turns out to not be the case.

Will be sure to let everyone know when we have a fix (or have at least identified the source of the issue) for the other platforms. Appreciate everyone’s patience.

somehow the update toggled them all off lol
everything is back to normal :+1:

On a mac, the latest update [Version 1.68.134 Chromium: 127.0.6533.88] has not resolved the issue.

I second this. Passwords are still lost in Mac.

The fix committed in Chromium will not affect behavior in macOS, Linux and iOS since the code was already checking for these operating systems, and the only change was to add Windows into the conditional check as well:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/641093c7627684a6c04986531209783f430fb205^!/

when adding base features. So only Windows will be affected by this change.

@adjidamo and @yo.movil, I appreciate the feedback. Have you had a chance to read through the topic?

As mentioned earlier, this issue is not yet resolved for Mac or Linux, only for Windows. So not sure the point in commenting to repeat that it’s not resolved yet?

Then I also linked to a quote which would take you to:
