It’s nice to be able to control how you browser handles media. For instance you could be the type who frequents comment sections under videos, and if you often get involved in somewhat protracted conversations you can frequently find yourself having to scroll back up to turn off the video. Also, it’s can mess with your watch history, although I guess that’s just an OCD thing.
Other sites suggested that android used to have this feature, but then google removed it for some reason. Given that they probably did it for cynical reasons, it might to nice to add it back for spite’s sake alone (especially if you can get it into the actual chromium repository, then google will have to waste money/man hours filtering it out in their own build if they want to keep it gone).
Hopefully there isn’t some annoying technical reason why this is infeasible.
