About The Media Overlay

OS: Win 10 20H2
Brave Version: 1.38.119 Chromium: 101.0.4951.67 (Official Build) (64-bit)

A way to get rid of this overlay would be nice, I’d like to play pause with my keyboard’s media buttons when I need to stop the browser’s audio while playing a full screen game. It pops on to the game window rather than silently pausing in the background. There seems to be a bug with Twitch too, when I unpause it won’t start playing unless I bring the tab directly into focus again.

I want to prevent the pop up because it comes up in game like this

By “Silently pausing” I want it to pause without showing in the game

(Yes, ‘officiel’ is a misspelling.)

By ‘this overlay’ - you might mean:

Correct?

Please clarify: “pops on to the game window rather than silently pausing in the background” - the ‘silently pausing in the background’ part.

Updated. Is that better? As you can see, it covers a large part of the screen and it stays there for a bit.

Thank you. See (including the replies):

I tried disabling the flag. That just completely disabled the media key on brave, though. I’d rather have it work, just don’t want the overlay to show up.

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/cookies

  • Disable: Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows

NOTE: For the remaining settings that you may consider / examine: What might work, to fix your issue?

POSSIBLY, you have a Media Overlay -type of widget installed.

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/newTab

Fiddle with the settings, so you can:

  • Remove widgets
  • Disable: Show background images

POSSIBLY, the websites have some ability - allowed by some browser settings:

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/content

Scroll down to ‘Additional permissions’ . . . and consider:

  • Protocol handlers: Don't allow sites to handle protocols
  • Automatic downloads: Sites can ask to automatically download multiple files
  • File editing: Don't allow sites to edit files or folders on your device
  • Clipboard: Don't allow sites to see text or images on your clipboard

The following shows the two possible settings for ‘Window placement’:

  • Window placement: Sites can ask to use info about your screens to open and place windows
  • Window placement: Don't allow sites use info about your screens to open and place windows

Then, scroll down to “Content” . . . and consider setting:

  • Pop-ups and redirects: Don't allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects
