4 year old bug still not fixed?

Spell check dictionary download failed.
Please check with your network administrator to make sure that the firewall is not blocking downloads from Brave servers.

since a few weeks (had to reset my pc) this message wont let the German dictionary download and therefore almost EVERYTHING is underlined red without being spelled wrong, super annoying and makes me oversee real mistakes much more possible.

i saw a topic from over 4 years ago that the team was aware and working on a fix, but this cant be the same bug, or is it?

best
Timo

what for? i’m not following

@timofuturum,
Where are you trying to download the dictionary from? What exact Windows OS are you using? What Brave version are you using? If you try this in other browsers and try to do the same thing, do you get the same results?

in the brave settings itself, from the brave servers.

win11 10.0.22631 Build 22631
brave v1.73.91
i dont have any other browsers insralled (or in use)

Do you have any firewalls, VPNs or otherwise altered connections that may be interfering here? Also, are you able to download other files from the internet without issue?

the windows firewall is active but ive even shut it of for a sec to see it would work, nothing else, no. Yes all the other downloads, do work fine as always.

Curious to know if you have any extensions installed at this time? Also curious to know if it’s just the German language or if any/all languages throw this error?

yes quite a few actually…

just tried czech and afrikaans, was added within less than a second

Hi there, I’m experiencing the same problem. A bunch of different languages load fine, but German (two flavours) and Portuguese do not.

I’m on Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon running
Brave Version 1.73.91 Chromium: 131.0.6778.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)

EDIT:
@timofuturum I found two solutions to get a working German dictionary and the easiest was to grab de-DE-3-0.bdic from here and put it in Brave’s Dictionary folder.

After a restart it works like a charm

Hey @doogie nice that you found a solution for German! where can i access Brave’s Dicrionary folder tho?

I’m not sure since I’m not on Windows, but internet tells me it is under %localappdata%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Dictionaries.

I’ve asked the team about this issue — unclear why those specific languages are not downloading properly.

this folder unfortunately doesnt exist  but the enlglish has to be around somewhere too

awesome thanks a lot!
